Deep Purple - BBC Sessions 1968-1970 2CD (2011)
EAC Rip | FLAC + CUE + LOG | 361 Mb | Covers | 98:21
Genre: Hard Rock

The transition of Deep Purple from a cult UK band that had chart success stateside, to the rock giants we all know is captured in these fascinating session recordings. Although the rarity of some of the sessions means the sound quality is often less than perfect, it is the stunning performances, many live-in studio, which shine through. This was a band who could play and who could electrify the audience and the listener. Many Purple aficionados would dare to suggest that the session version of the classic 'Child In Time' surpasses that of the studio version. That is, of course, is subjective but why this set is so important to the Purple story, to the band's fans and any general rock fan. Details

Because this second album by the former New York Yankee outfielder was released a month before the passing of NBA Star-turned-popular jazz bassist Wayman Tisdale, there are bound to be some comparisons made. It's a logical starting point, because both were shining lights in two very different fields.

Label: EMI

Rare Limited Vinyl Issue. Manufactured in EU as a 180 gram digitally remastered vinyl pressing. Brilliant greatest hits album in that it manages to sound like a mega concept album in the way that the music from different stages of the band's history and development are woven together so seamlessly like ...as if in a dreamscape. The edits of Echoes and Shine on you Crazy Diamond as well as samplers of briefer lesser known compositions (that segue between the famous songs) are really well done.

Passengers is a collaboration between U2 and Brian Eno, so it should come as no surprise that the music on Original Soundtracks 1 is an extension of U2's last album, Zooropa. Under Eno's influence, the group incorporates more ambient electronic soundscapes, which unravel over the course of the album. In fact, Original Soundtracks 1 sounds more like a Brian Eno album than a U2 release, except when the band's knack for anthemic pop songwriting shines through every once and a while.

UK act Summer Indoors was formed by Mark Jordan (drums) and Jon Dahms (guitars) back in 1987. Chris Dempsey (bass, vocals) and Rob Williams (vocals) made up the final parts of the first dition of the band, at the onset a covers band with a certain fancy for Rush. Vocalist Williams also ran a studio however, and due to that commitment he left the band early on, with Dempsey taking over the lead vocal duties. As the band opted to concentrate on material within a progressive rock reference also when writing material of their own, they soon found that a keyboard player would be a nice addition to the band. Enter Shaun Milsom, a local theater keyboardist...

Falling somewhere in between heavy metal and AOR, Rush were one of the success stories of the period from 1976 to 1986--all the more surprising because few Canadians manage to break out from the land of the maple leaf in this area of music. Much of their following idolized Alex Lifeson, who was a guitar hero with the technical ability of a Page or a Beck. Occasionally Neil Peart's lyrics leave a little to be desired: "the shifting shafts of shining, weave the fabric of their dreams . . ." Jon Anderson from Yes was afflicted with the same condition of pretentiolyricitus. That aside, the music is faultless.

Ralph Towner: Solstice Sound And Shadows
Genre: Jazz | Released: 1977 | Pt: 44:53 | Label: ECM 1095
Format: Flac > 232 Mb | MP3 320k > 108 Mb | Artwork

Ralph Towner is in fine form on this set of five tracks, the first of which, "Distant Hills," is an Oregon standard from the band's Vanguard period. Towner's compositions shine with their subtlety and grace. The playing here by Towner and a group of other ECM artists is what made the label so noteworthy: It is full of elegance and aplomb and the musicians are as aware of space as they are of what fills it.
