Genre: Jazz

This is a selection of original compositions by the very original Carla Bley, played by a small group of Jazz musicians who represent both traditional, R&B and avant garde influences - another way of saying they're gifted and versatile. They're playing sophisticated compositions with that sense of verve, ease and informality that brings an element of joy to great Jazz. I was tempted to take off one star for the piece on which Bley sings because it seems self-indulgent and a bit silly compared to the rest, but good humor prevails throughout, and, let's face it, she's entitled. The rest of the pieces are so good that one less than stellar track shouldn't bring the rating down. It's worth noting that three of these compositions had previously been recorded by Art Farmer and Gary Burton, but Bley gives them adventurously different treatments here.

For over forty years, Carla Bley has written music that infuses jazz traditions with her own personality. She continues to lead a variety of ensembles, from small combos to large-scale big bands. With Looking for America, Bley returns to the big band format. Totaling 18 pieces, the group is a rich blend of 13 horns, two keyboards, and a rhythm section. She has worked with many of the featured musicians for decades, and Bley consequently composes and arranges with their individual voices in mind.

An enchanting debut for a Finnish-Norwegian trio featuring the trumpet and vocalese of the great Per Jorgensen, the piano of Samuli Mikkonen and the drums of Markku Ounaskari. This is sinewy, hypnotic music unlike any other in the ECM catalogue. It's slow moving but full of purpose and long, winding melodies that insinuate themselves deep under the skin. Ounaskari and J rgensen have played with the likes of Lee Konitz, Don Cherry, Jon Balke, Michael Mantler, Kenny Wheeler and Tomasz Stanko, amongst others. (Source: Editorial Review, amazon.com)

Carla Bley & Her Remarkable Big Band - Appearing Nightly 2006
MP3 @ 320 | 119 MB | Cover
Genre:Jazz

That her band is deemed "remarkable" is no understatement; trumpeter Lew Soloff and saxophonist Andy Sheppard are among the outstanding soloists. As always, Bley's originals are intricate, absorbing, and often moving, with opener "Greasy Gravy" the epic "Appearing Nightly at the Black Orchid" standing out. Her rearrangement of " Hadn't Anyone `Til You" closes the disc with a lyrical flourish.

Since the 1960s, Carla Bley has been composing for big bands in a way that enriches the tradition and history of jazz, while creating new possibilities for the form. APPEARING NIGHTLY (2008) is yet another notch in her string of achievements. From the retro-themed cover art to the progressive yet nostalgia-tinged work within, Bley's work looks forward and backward at once.

Do not ask for lossless, if you need that then buy the album and support a great musician.
