It is 1830 in Paris and the rent is due, but the money is not there. An article here, a painting there and a monkey with a cup gives them enough money for the rent, but not for food. Fortunately, Musette from downstairs has enough food for everyone including Mimi - the poor little waif from next door who Rodolphe has met. But Count Paul also has his lusting eye on Mimi and uses her embroidery to get close to her. Rodolphe and Mimi fall in love and Mimi works endlessly to support Rodolphe who is writing his play with a new found passion. Details

Callas never sang the role of Mimì on stage, but this did not prevent her recorded interpretation from being, as described by Philip Hope-Wallacein Gramophone, 'brilliantly realised... This Mimì comes alive and later haunts you in the most extraordinary way ... one of the most moving I have ever heard.' Giuseppe di Stefano is anardent Rodolfo and the young Anna Moffomakes a delectable Musetta. Details

The role of Rodolfo from Giacomo Puccini's La Bohème launched Luciano Pavarotti's career in 1961 when he made his professional debut in a small regional production in Reggio Emilia, Italy. He would revisit the role several times over his career, including this 1972 album considered to be one of the finest versions of La Bohème ever recorded. Equally impressive here is Pavarotti's childhood friend Mirella Freni as Mimi. Conductor Herbert von Karajan proves himself a masterful, sensitive interpreter of Puccini as he leads the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Details

"This Bohème is a glorious vindication of traditional staging at its imaginative, re-creative best. Giancarlo Del Monaco here turns his attention to the much more popular work and comes up with a humdinger of a production, beautifully set by Michael Scott in period, fast-moving and full of pertinent detail." "Most operaphiles would not consider the hyper-dynamic Sir Georg Solti to be a likely candidate to conduct La bohème, but they also probably did not expect him to do an excellent La traviata prior to the sensational Angela Gheorghiu debut performance at Covent Garden. Herbert von Karajan’s Decca-London recording with Pavarotti and Freni has traditionally and deservedly set the standard for La bohème recordings, but this one holds up surprisingly well to direct comparison..." ~Fanfare
