Compiling material from Willie Nelson's later career, the box set Revolutions of Time: The Journey 1975-1993 provides a thorough overview of the singer's most popular recordings, as well as some of his most obscure. Divided into three thematic discs -- "Pilgrimage," "Sojourns," and "Exodus" -- the box contains most of his hits from the era, including selections from The Red Headed Stranger and Stardust. These songs are on "Pilgrimage." "Sojourns" concentrates on his duets, while "Exodus" is filled with songs from the late '80s and early '90s...

Oliver Nelson's follow-up to his classic Blues & The Abstract Truth session for Impulse – and like that one, a tremendous little album – filled with deep tones and wonderful colors in sound! The group here's a bit larger than before – an ensemble that includes Phil Woods on alto, Ben Webster on tenor, Thad Jones on trumpet, Pepper Adams on baritone, Roger Kellaway on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Grady Tate on drums. The album includes some superb original compositions by Nelson – just the kind of overlooked jazz numbers that make the set great – and as with most of his arrangements from the time, there's a perfect balance between group force and intimate solo space! Titles include "The Critic's Choice", "Blues & The Abstract Truth", "One For Bob", and 2 versions of Dave Brubeck's "Theme From Mr. Broadway".

Damn, that's some unequal album. First of all, almost every artist here is way past his prime time. Eddie Vedder is exception, and maybe Young, with his recent "Ragged Glory" fame. Many of these versions are horrible, ... but, I gotta say, black artists here come up really good, especially O'Jays, and Wonder is cool too. ...

Recorded at Lake Tahoe in 1978, WILLIE AND FAMILY LIVE effectively documents the laid-back, freewheeling approach Nelson and his band take to live performances. Unlike many country acts that strive to play the same set with the same note-for-note precision every night, Nelson's band prefers to live on the edge, wringing surprises out of every note and beat. This "free jam" aesthetic explains why Nelson is popular among Grateful Dead fans, and aficionados of this musical approach will be most likely to enjoy WILLIE AND FAMILY LIVE. Details

'The American Dream' was Bear Family's complete edition of Ricky Nelson's Verve and Imperial recordings from 1957-1962. The story ended when he left Imperial Records at the end of '62. During those five years, he was among the top-selling record stars… up there with Elvis and Pat Boone. We pick up the story in 1963 when he signed an unprecedentedly lucrative contract with Decca Records. It was the most challenging period of Rick's career. The family sitcom, 'The Adventures Of Ozzie & Harriett,' was winding down and Ricky Nelson had to carve out his own future as a musician. After a few hits reviving standards like For You and Fools Rush In, Ricky Nelson completely reinvented his music… and along the way he made the first and some say the greatest country rock records. After 25 years of collaboration, Bob James and Nathan East are set to release their debut duo album The New Cool in September on Yamaha Entertainment Group. The New Cool marks new territory for legendary jazz pianist Bob James and bassist Nathan East, who’ve spent decades playing together in contemporary jazz quartet Fourplay but never before as an official duo. “The more I played with Nathan over the course of many live performances and spanning more than 20 years, the more in sync we were whether or not we had the anchor of the drums,” says James. “Something special happens when we only have each other’s notes to play off of, when the music is totally exposed.” Recorded entirely in Nashville, Tennessee, the album is a collection of original material contributed by both James and East, along with a small selection of standards. The duo’s musicianship is laid bare in a soulful reimagining of Irving Berlin’s “How Deep is the Ocean,” while the pair is joined by strings and woodwinds for a surprising take on Willie Nelson’s classic country hit 'Crazy'.
