The nine-time Juno-winning Canadian James Ehnes is centre stage in a new recording of orchestral works by Berlioz, with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Andrew Davis. This recording was made following an extraordinary concert in November 2014 with the same forces, in which James Ehnes played two instruments made by Stradivarius, respectively a viola in the solo part of Harold en Italie – ‘symphony with a principal viola part’, in Berlioz’s words – and a violin in the solo of Rêverie et Caprice, both of which works feature here.

Hector Berlioz was a French Romantic composer, best known for his compositions Symphonie fantastique and Grande messe des morts (Requiem). Berlioz made significant contributions to the modern orchestra with his Treatise on Instrumentation. He specified huge orchestral forces for some of his works, and conducted several concerts with more than 1,000 musicians. He also composed around 50 songs. His influence was critical for the further development of Romanticism, especially in composers like Richard Wagner, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Franz Liszt, Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler and many others.

Jerry Lee Lewis – Live In Italy (1987)
MagMid | 1987 | Rock & Roll | EAC RIP | FLAC+CUE+LOG+HQ-Covers (400Dpi) | 410Mb+8Mb

16 lives tunes taken from a couple of shows in Milan and Rome, Italy in April, 1987. I've heard better live sets from Jerry Lee on record but he certainly isn't asleep at the piano or anything. His daughter Phoebe and his sister Linda Gail are the backup singers, the band (uncredited) is pretty good and the Killer's piano pounding is, as always, impressive. Highlights are Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms with the gals and a fine honky tonk tune, There Must Be More To Love Than This. The sound quality is a little muddy, but the real fan of the Killer will not hesitate to get it. Details

Harold is an electrifying reading that captures the raw passion of Berlioz better than any other. Throwing caution to the winds, Bernstein and Linzer (the Philharmonic's first-chair violist) are rough, edgy and incredibly exciting, eschewing entirely the refinement that passes for idiomatic Berlioz in other hands. Inexplicably omitted from the Royal Edition, this is one of the truly great Bernstein performances, giving Berlioz, the wild rebel of his time, his full due. It took a musician of Bernstein's youthful boldness to defy our established tradition to restore the composer's essential spirit. (Cleopatre, already in the Royal set, is a wonderful performance of Berlioz's early cantata.) - by Peter Gutmann
