Getting a solid grip on the phrasing and rhythmic qualities of West Coast blues is also the key to achieving a real sense of boogie, swing, and jump ala Texas blues. Good enough for Stevie Ray, Jimmy Vaughn, Anson Funderburgh, and Johnny Guitar Watson - good enough for us. And what blues player worth their salt doesn't have a couple of dozen jazzy bebopish lines to spice up their solos and improvisations?!

EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 336 Mb (incl 5%) | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 124 Mb (incl 5%) | Scans included
Genre: West Coast Blues, Harmonica Blues | Label: Delta Groove Music | # DGPCD174 | Time: 00:48:37

"West Coast Toast" heralds the arrival of Mitch Kashmar’s long-awaited third studio album from Delta Groove. Although fans had the live recording "Live at Labatt" (2008) and a CD reissue of his early ’80s era LP "100 Miles to Go" (2010) to tide them over, it’s been ten years since his last full studio effort, "Wake Up & Worry" (2006). This time out, Mitch pays tribute to his legacy, tipping his musical hat to the unique sounds of West Coast blues with a program of well-chosen covers mixed in with his own original compositions, all filtered through his own individualistic approach to the blues, and distilled down into the essence of what the blues is today. Along the way, Mitch Kashmar, together with the stellar backing musicianship of Junior Watson (guitar), Fred Kaplan (piano), Bill Stuve (bass) and Marty Dodson (drums), ably proves that the golden era of West Coast blues harmonica isn’t behind us – it’s still happening right now!

Mark Winkler & Cheryl Bentyne - West Coast Cool (2013)
Vocal Jazz | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 56 min | 135 MB
Label: Summit Records | Rel: 2013

Known for his smooth, relaxed, laid-back sense of swing, Mark Winkler is a flexible vocalist/songwriter whose influences (direct or indirect) include Dave Frishberg, Mose Allison, Kenny Rankin, and Michael Franks (among others). The Los Angeles resident is comfortable in either jazz or pop settings; he has done his share of traditional pop and crossover jazz/smooth jazz work, but he can also handle straight-ahead jazz and bop. Whether a Winkler recording has a jazz improviser's perspective or more of a pop/crossover perspective has depended on different factors, including the label and the producer. Some of Winkler's work has leaned toward the Mose Allison/Dave Frishberg side of things; other times, his approach has been closer to Michael Franks or Kenny Rankin. And either way, Winkler generally maintains his smoothness; he has never been known as a forceful, overly aggressive, or in-your-face type of singer. Details

Arriving in New York in 1945, on his first day in town Ray Brown met and played with Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Bud Powell. He was hired by Gillespie for his small groups and his big band; "One Bass Hit" and "Two Bass Hit" were early features, and he can be seen with Dizzy Gillespie in the 1947 film Jiving in Bebop. Although not a soloist on the level of an Oscar Pettiford, Brown's quick reflexes and ability to accompany soloists in a swinging fashion put him near the top of his field. After playing with Jazz at the Philharmonic, he married Ella Fitzgerald (their marriage only lasted during 1948-1952), and for a time led his own trio to back the singer.,.

Eric Reed, Ralph Moore, Robert Hurst, Jeff Hamilton - West Coast Jazz Summit (1996)
mp3 320 kbps | 44.1 Khz | Joint Stereo | 57 min 53 sec | 137.7 mb
Label: Mons Records | Genre: Jazz | August 13, 1996

Calling the gathering for this CD a "summit" might be overstating the case a bit. The Los Angeles-based quartet (tenor saxophonist Ralph Moore, pianist Eric Reed, bassist Bob Hurst and drummer Jeff Hamilton) may not all play together on a regular basis, but their paths have crossed many times. For this set, they perform ten veteran standards, including "Pick Yourself Up," "Old Folks," "Golden Earrings," "Caravan" and "Tequila." Moore and Reed take many fine solos, and the music, although not containing any real surprises, is satisfying and swinging.
