Directly from the Vault and for a limited time, your actual 'recorded tape' souvenir from UMRK. First come, first served. Originally produced for Vinyl by Frank Zappa. Liner notes by John Frusciante. Close your eyes and imagine how listening to an album used to be. The first reported copies were sold during the ZPZ shows around August 3rd 2007. There are no sound effects on the CD (as opposed to the video/DVD). All tracks are previously unreleased on CD and with the exception of the Token Vamp which appeared for the first time in The Dub Room Special. "The basic tracks from Inca Roads & Florentine Pogen were recorded live at KCET during the production of our TV special", writes FZ on One Size Fits All (1975). This equally thoroughly rejected television program is know as A Token Of His Extreme.

The Happenings - 'The Happenings' (1966) + 'Psycle' (1967) 2 LP in 1 CD, Remastered 2003
EAC | FLAC | Tracks (Cue&Log) ~ 435 Mb (incl 5%) | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 179 Mb (incl 5%) | Scans included
Genre: AM Pop, Sunshine Pop, Pop/Rock | Label: Collectables | # COL-CD-7499 | Time: 01:04:10

The Happenings are best-known for their hit single "See You in September," which is a sunny slice of sunshine pop featuring happy, bouncy vocals and intricate harmonies reminiscent of great white doo wop groups like the Four Seasons and the Tokens, who were not-so-coincidentally the Happenings' mentors and producers. Collectables has reissued both of the Happenings' records on one disc: 1966's The Happenings and 1967's Psycle. Both discs feature the stunning vocal gymnastics of their hit single and their updated doo wop sound coated with an easy listening gloss of strings on a not-very-thick Wall of Sound. Most of the songs on their debut were written by the members of the Tokens and are not bad but not that memorable, as they follow the formula of their hit but pale in comparison. An exception to this is the strange "You're in a Bad Way," which is a spooky track filled with death-related imagery that sports a surprisingly funky backbeat.

A key example of why the Japanese scene was so great at the start of the 70s – really mindblowing work from keyboardist Masabumi Kikuchi, and every bit as wonderful as some of our favorite American sides from the time! Kikuchi acoustic piano with a warmly soulful sensitivity – alongside the Fender Rhodes of Masahiro Kikuchi, who has a hard-edged sound that almost takes off from Joe Zawinul's use of the instrument, then soars into even mightier territory. The style is somewhat loose at times, but never too free – and the group here is a sextet that also includes amazing alto from Kosuke Mine – an excellent player who's never gotten his due on this side of the Pacific. Titles include "Love Token", "Tenacious Prayer Forever", "Roaming In Darkness", "Young Bloods", and "Piece To Peace".

Tan Dun, Yo-Yo Ma - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (2000)

Tan Dun, Yo-Yo Ma - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (2000)
EAC | FLAC (Tracks) + cue.+log ~ 257 Mb | Mp3, CBR320 kbps ~ 150 Mb | Scans included
Soundtrack, Score, Contemporary | Label: Sony Classical | # SK 89347 | 00:50:13

The classical works of Tan Dun typically fuse compositional elements from the East and the West, but for his soundtrack to Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, musical cultures aren't so much blurred as coexistent side-by-side. While the magical martial arts film doesn't boast music as stunning as its visuals, this soundtrack is still beautiful and elegant, a perfect complement to the movie's mysticism. Just don't expect epic, John Williams-inspired bombast here. On "A Wedding Interrupted," the riveting brass and string section introduction segues into soft-hued meditations; "Night Fight" boasts spiky percussion but sounds more reminiscent of Stomp than a kung-fu scene. That said, Dun's understated score--filled with Asian instrumentation, Romantic cello solos from Yo-Yo Ma, and a token theme song with vocals by Asian pop star CoCo Lee--is still a fascinating listen. Fans of Ma and Dun shouldn't pass this up.

Rodney Mannsfield - Love In a Serious Way (1994)
EAC Rip | FLAC (Tracks) +CUE, LOG | 461 MB | Covers Included
Jazz | Label: Noteworthy Records| Catalog Number: NWR9401

Although music like that heard on drummer Michael White's CD is marketed as "contemporary jazz," much of it sounds like Ramsey Lewis's recordings of 20 years ago. The hook-filled melodies, whiny sax by Everette Harp, the obligatory throwaway soul vocal from Phil Perry, a few pleasing but vapid melodic solos, the token jazz tune ("'Round Midnight") and fadeouts whenever the music nears the five- to six-minute mark are all quite predictable and formulaic.
