Jazz / Avant-Garde Jazz / Drums

The man who invented free-jazz drumming some five decades ago remains as committed and uncompromising-and as ineffably great-as ever. These two releases are culled from live performances by Murray and saxophonist Sabir Mateen from 2002 and 2004. Joining them on various tracks are pianists Dave Burrell and John Blum, saxophonists Oluyemi Thomas and Louis Belogenis and bassist Alan Silva. Mateen has long been one of my favorites. Few saxophonists are better able to act and react in the moment. He can create with only the slightest input; give Mateen a cymbal ping and he'll use it as inspiration to construct a riveting 20-minute solo. Murray gives him a great deal more than a ping.

Jazz / Post Bop / Saxophone / Piano Trio

Reissue with the latest remastering. Features original cover artwork. Comes with a descripton in Japanese. Harold Ashby's a tremendous tenorist – almost like Von Freeman or Buck Hill, in that he had years of experience before getting a bit of wider experience on records – thanks to albums like this! The set's got Ashby's great raspy tone in perfect formation with a trio led by pianist Horace Parlan – himself experiencing a big new wave of exposure at the time, on some of his other Timeless sessions, which marked a move to spacious, more tradition-filled playing – which makes him a great partner for Ashby on this set!

Mustafa Al Sunni - Songs of Sudan (1999)
MP3 AVG 201 kbps | 12 Tracks | ~145 MB | May 4, 1999 | Covers
Genre : World, International, African, Sudanese & Ethnic | Label: Nimbus Records

The Sudan is a place in which singers and instrumentalists are known for their very organic mixture of Middle Eastern and African elements. This is true of a contemporary Sudanese pop singer like the jazz-influenced Rasha, and it is also true of a Sudanese traditionalist such as Mustafa al Sunni. Although al Sunni wasn't born until 1964 and was only in his early 30s when Songs of the Sudan was recorded in 1997, this CD contains none of the electric pop sounds of his generation. Very traditional in its outlook, Songs of the Sudan finds the charismatic singer/oud player forming a duo with percussionist Abd al Hafiz Karar and sticking to an acoustic setting. Lovers of Middle Eastern music will instantly recognize the string instrument that al Sunni plays as the oud, an Arabic lute...

Lighthouse - Sunny Days (1972) [Remastered 2008]
EAC Rip | FLAC (image & cue & log) | 288 MB | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 95 MB | Scans (JPEG) | 34 MB | 40:56
Genre: Jazz-Rock / Brass Rock / Psychedelic Rock | Country: Canada | Label: Retro Disc International | RDI 33032

The title track to the Sunny Days album became one of Lighthouse's two Top 40 hits, peaking at number 34 in November of 1972. Sunny Days was the band's seventh album, yet their full-scale sound and spirited rock & roll style was still very much intact. The saxophone and trombone work that gave them the label as a poor man's Chicago can be found streaming through songs like "Silver Bird" and "Letter Home," while "Broken Guitar Blues" became one of their hardiest efforts, receiving quite a bit of air play on Canadian radio stations.
