Blues / Modern Electric Blues / Soul Blues / Early R&B / Memphis Blues

The great bluesman B.B. King, who died in 2015, was one of the few artists whose every note was of interest. This 25-track CD of mostly previously unissued recordings are drawn from his sessions for Modern Records between 1954 and 1962. Be Careful Baby is a rare thing a B.B. King song that has never been released before in any version, while two tracks appeared on Ace's 2014 RPM compilation Speak Easy. The version of Catfish Blues is from a completely different session to the familiar issued version and from B.B.'s commentary appears to be the version he played on the road. There are many comments from B.B. and the band which provide an insight into the recording process and B.B.'s relaxed and informal manner in the studio. The CD ends with a previous unheard interview, recorded backstage at the Fillmore Ballroom in San Francisco with radio station KSAY at the 10/10 spot on your dial. All tracks are from the original master tapes.

With his larger-than-life persona, roaring vocals, and the raw, skittering guitar lines of Hubert Sumlin behind him, Howlin’ Wolf turned out dozens of stellar Chicago blues singles for RPM and Chess Records between 1951 and 1962, including “Smokestack Lightnin’,” "Spoonful," "Red Rooster," and the magnificent “Killing Floor,” among many others. All of these, along with his other classic and essential singles (both A- and B-sides) from the first decade of his career, are collected here in this expansive, three-disc, 80-track set, which also includes several sides recorded at sessions during this period but never released.

Rhythm & Blues, Modern Electric Blues | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 75 min | 176 MB
Label: Ace | Rel: 1999

RPM Hits 1951-1957 is a first-rate summary of the cream of the first few years of B.B. King's career, the 26 songs all taken from 1951-1957 singles on the RPM label. Though relatively few of these have survived down the years to become famous standards or oldies, they were incredibly successful in their time; 18 of them were R&B hits, and another couple scraped into the bottom of the pop charts. "Three O'Clock Blues" and "Sweet Little Angel" are a couple of King's most famous tunes, but there are plenty of other ballads and shuffles here that made their mark in their day, like "You Know I Love You," "Woke Up This Morning" (how's that for titling a hit after one of the most overused blues clichés?), "Please Hurry Home," and "You Upset Me Baby." Miles Davis Kind Of Blue. Classic Records Reissue of Columbia CS 8163

Kind of Blue is one of my favorite albums. I'm fortunate enough to own a nice mono 6-Eye (CL 8163), as well as two stereo 6-Eyes, not particularly early pressings, but 6-Eyes nonetheless. So why would I even want a reissue copy? Classic went the extra Miles on this one by including a second disc in this set. I also haven't gotten any of the more recent Classic reissues, and I wanted to see what kind of job they did in their Columbia Jazz series. Details

For Boogie Chillen', Audio Fidelity went back to the original 1948-1954 recording session tapes of these "Detroit Blues Masterpieces" for the SACD edition. The only exception will be the title track since recording tape was not in use in 1948 at the United Sound recording studio in Detroit when it was recorded. In that case, "Boogie Chillen'" was transferred from the surviving 78 RPM acetate record. The SACD compilation and remastering work for the album was done by Steve Hoffman at Kevin Gray's AcousTech Mastering Studio with Lon Neumann serving as the DSD Technician on the remastering session. Blues / Soul Blues / Modern Electric Blues

No way can a mere four discs cover every facet of the blues king's amazing recording career, but MCA makes a valiant stab at it. The first two discs, as expected, are immaculate: opening with his Bullet Records debut ("Miss Martha King"), the box continues with a handful of pivotal RPM/Kent masters before digging into his 1960s ABC-Paramount material ("I'm Gonna Sit in 'til You Give In" and "My Baby's Comin' Home" are little-recalled gems). The hits -- "The Thrill Is Gone," "Why I Sing the Blues," "To Know You Is to Love You" -- are all here, and if much of the fourth disc is pretty disposable, it only mirrors King's own winding down in the studio.

Ike Quebec's 1961-1962 comeback albums for Blue Note were all pretty rewarding, but Blue and Sentimental is his signature statement of the bunch, a superbly sensuous blend of lusty blues swagger and achingly romantic ballads.
