Rock / Contemporary Pop

After two albums of muted, mature jazz-inflected pop, the last being an explicit album about death, Sting created his first unapologetically pop album since the Police with Ten Summoner's Tales. The title, a rather awkward pun on his given last name, is significant, since it emphasizes that this album is a collection of songs, without any musical conceits or lyrical concepts tying it together. And, frankly, that's a bit of a relief after the oppressively somber The Soul Cages and the hushed though lovely, Nothing Like the Sun.

Ten Summoner's Tales is the fourth solo studio album by the English rock musician Sting. The title is a combined pun of his family name, Sumner, and a character in Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, the summoner. Released in 1993, it explores themes of love and morality in a noticeably upbeat mood compared to his previous release, the introspective The Soul Cages released in 1991 after the loss of both his parents in the 1980s. This album contained two US hits; "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You" reached No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and "Fields of Gold" reached #23...

US composer and musician Johannes Luley is probably best known as the driving force of US band Moth Vellum. Five years after the release of Moth Vellum's highly acclaimed debut, Johannes is unleashing a solo album of stunning beauty and complexity. "Tales From Sheepfather's Grove" is an epic work that is bound to take the prog community by storm. Johannes replaced the drum kit with a vast array of hand percussion instruments, giving the album a very primeval feel. These tribal grooves represent the foundation for a dense, cinematic sound scape comprised of acoustic guitar, mandolin, ukulele, moog synth and lush vocal arrangements. The occasional electric guitar is the icing on the cake. "Tales From Sheepfather's Grove" features elements of progressive rock, classical, ambient, world and folk, all combined into a unique sound...

The characters from the classic Grimm's Fairy Tales engaged in activities the Grimm Brothers probably wouldn't approve of. Imagine the classic fairy tales Cindarella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty. Now imagine these stories set to a bad knock-off of the soundtrack to Hair. Now imagine that they're set in a magical kingdom where the women are typically unencumbered by clothing. Now imagine that this magical kingdom is populated by mushrooms that turn into dwarves, men in bear suits with tiny golden crowns, and witches with neon-blue hair. Details

This 2-CD set is effectively a reissue of the previously-available Stockholm To Philadelphia 2-CD set. Disc 1 is a powerful set recorded in February 1971 in Stockholm, and is a good representation of Island-era MTH live, despite it being a somewhat subdued audience.
Disc 2 is the famous performance at the Tower Theatre, Philadelphia PA in November 1972. David Bowie introduced the show, and joined the band onstage for All The Young Dudes.
The package comes with new sleeve notes by Keith Smith of the Mott The Hoople Appreciation Society. Like Stockholm To Philadelphia, this is an essential purchase and if you can't get one they you should get the other. Of course, getting both would probably appeal only to the fanatical completist. The multifaceted, deeply personal dramatic universe of Eric Rohmer has had an effect on cinema unlike any other. One of the founding critics of the history-making Cahiers du cinema, Rohmer began translating his written manifestos to film in the sixties, standing apart from his New Wave contemporaries, like Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard, with his patented brand of gently existential, hyperarticulate character studies set against vivid seasonal landscapes.
