Paul Weller (born John William Weller on 25 May 1958) is an English singer-songwriter. Starting with the Mod/punk-rock band The Jam (1976-1982), Weller then went on to branch out musically to a more soulful style with The Style Council (1983-1989). In 1991 he re-established himself as a successful solo artist and continues to remain a respected singer, lyricist and guitarist, a fact reaffirmed by his recent awarding of the 2009 BRIT award for 'Best Male Solo Artist'. He has remained a national rather than an international star, which may be unsurprising considering much of his songwriting is rooted in British culture. He is also the principal figure of the 1970s + 80's Mod revival and is often referred to as the Modfather. Details

Parting ways with Simon Dine, the chief collaborator on every one of the records in his great new millennial revival, Paul Weller settles into a celestial groove on Saturn's Pattern. Aligning himself with Jan "Stan" Kybert, a producer who has been in his orbit since 2002's Illumination, Weller veers left from the bright modernism of 2012's Sonik Kicks, choosing to soften his edges and expand his horizons. As the album comes crashing into view via the heavy blooze of "White Skies" -- a collaboration with neo-psychedelic pranksters Amorphous Androgynous that seems closer to Black Keys than Humble Pie and not all that trippy, either -- it doesn't seem that Saturn's Pattern would get quite so mellow, but it doesn't take long before Weller happily lets himself drift away in a haze.

Stanley Road is the third solo album by Paul Weller, released by Go! Discs in 1995. In 1998 Q magazine readers voted it the 46th greatest album of all time. The album took its name from the street in Woking where Weller grew up. Weller claimed on a BBC special that he hopes he can one day create an album as perfect as this one, stating that all the stars were aligned during the writing and recording period of Stanley Road.

Given his recent glut of live albums, it's clear that Paul Weller has become quite keen on documenting his activities for the sake of his fans, and this DVD combines a live gig at London's 100 Club with footage of Weller in the studio recording his 2006 album As Is Now. Paul Weller: As Is Now features a 45-minute documentary on the making of the album, and if the overly busy camera work and the constant reminders of Weller's down-to-earth genius get to be a bit much, it does offer a welcome look at his studio technique, and makes clear one of the reasons As Is Now was so good is that Weller and his band knocked most of the tracks live in the studio with minimal overdubs, and the energy of the performances crackles onscreen as well as on the audio tracks.
