Olga Pasichnyk - soprano, Mara Galassi - harp, Musica Petropolitana

From the time of the reign of the empress Elizabeth Petrovna a different way of life began to establish itself in Russia, and a different kind of woman, not only aristocratic through birth but also because she belonged to a creative élite: a woman at one and the same time musician, poetess and composer of ballads, who sang and played several instruments [...] These 'new' aristocrats adopted European manners, combining them with typically Russian tradition. This CD contains an excellent selection of songs from the Russian 5. I was atrracted immediately by the Borodin songs which open this CD, and was suprise to find that the quality of the songs are just as good for the less well known Balakirev and Cui. And maybe because of their lack of formal music training, they tend to excel in this short genre. Borodina does justice to all the songs. Her voice is dark and seductive and her interpretation tends to understate (when comparing to Gorchakova), which is perfectly fine.

There is no point in getting snooty about Adriana Lecouvreur, it may be implausible melodrama, but has held the stage for just over one hundred years providing meaty fodder for monstres sacrés of all voice types. Classed as a verismo (realist) opera, which is a dubious appellation for an experience that includes dodgy rococo wigs and death by violets; it is an operatic equivalent of the sort of well made play that migrated from the boards, via opera to celluloid in Hollywood’s golden age. Histrionics aside, it is a fluent, lyrical score that contains numerous plums. It is above all, a diva vehicle... JULIAN GRANT

May 17th sees Erik Satie's 150th anniversary and ECHO-Klassik Award winning pianist Olga Scheps presents the only new studio recording of his most beautiful piano solo works for the Satie celebrations 2016. Erik Satie is among the most popular composers worldwide, his most famous piano pieces such as „Gymnopédie No. 1” or “Je te veux” are instantly recognisable, having be used constantly in motion picture soundtracks and TV ads. As a special Bonus Olga Scheps recorded “Gentle Threat” by Chilly Gonzales, whom she frequently works together with on stage. Olga Scheps was born in Moscow in 1986, the daughter of two pianists, and discovered the instrument for herself at the age of four. She began studying the piano more intensively after her family moved to Germany in 1992. At an early age she had already developed her own unique style of keyboard playing, which combines intense emotiveness and powerful expressivity with extraordinary pianistic technique.

Tchaikovsky was one of the earlier students of the St Petersburg Conservatory established by Anton Rubinstein, completing his studies there to become a member of the teaching staff at the similar institution established in Moscow by Anton Rubinstein’s brother, Nikolay. He was able to withdraw from teaching when a rich widow, Nadezhda von Meck, offered him financial support; this support continued for much of his life, although, according to the original conditions of the pension, they never met. Tchaikovsky was a man of neurotic diffidence, his self-doubt increased by his homosexuality.

In 2011 Russian soprano Olga Peretyatko showed herself an impressively versatile artist on her début CD, ‘’La bellezza del canto.’’ On her second album, “Arabesque”, where she is accompanied by the NDR Sinfonieorchester (NDR Radio Symphony Orchestra) under the baton of Enrique Mazzola, she again casts her net wide, from sophisticated bel canto to light music. In addition to arias by Verdi, Bellini and Strauss, Ms Peretyatko, has recorded pieces by the French composers, Gounod and Bizet. Also, for the first time on disc we hear her singing Mozart, one of her favourite composers. Her recital includes Mozart’s concert aria K. 538, “Ah se in ciel, benigne stele,” as well as Donna Anna’s dramatic coloratura aria “Crudele…non mi dir” fromDon Giovanni, and Susanna’s idyllic “Rose aria” from The Marriage of Figaro.
