Unlike the first soundtrack (More) they provided for filmmaker Barbet Shroeder, the music is much more "a propos" with the images but not that much with the storyline. The storyline is about a French bored housewife in vacation in Papua New-Guinea getting hooked up with a bunch of hippies, out for escape to the paradisiacal valley (hence the title La Vallée), yet unknown to white-man knowledge and unmarked on any map, because always obscured by clouds (hence the other title), and a quest for rare bird feathers. The M-Tron is modeled on the legendary British instrument, the Mellotron. This instrument was manufactured in various guises between 1963 and 1986 and was used by artists including The Beatles, The Moody Blues' Mike Pinder, Black Sabbath, Rick Wakeman and Genesis' Tony Banks. The instrument faded into semi-obscurity during the 80's and early 90's, but due, in part, to its evocative and unique nostalgic sound, it was rediscovered and used by artists including Oasis, Radiohead, Kasabian and countless others. This collection of electro-acoustic music from the legendary studios of Cologne's electronic music features the works of some of the field's most seminal proponents, such as Herbert Eimert, whose "Glockenspiel" is here. Also here are early exploratory works by composers who scaled back their investigations in later years, like Gyorgy Ligeti, whose two monumental works from the '50s -- "Glissandi" and "Articulation" -- are included in the set. Also featured are Herbert Brun, Franco Evangelisti, and the obscure but no-less-important Bengt Hambrauuse and Karel Goeyvaerts. While these may be just names to others, these early pioneers using sine-wave generators; small, primitive sound oscillation systems; tape delay systems; and manual manipulation of speed, timbre, texture, and sonance offered the future something indispensable: they manipulated natural processes of auditory awareness and created a dimensionless area of exploration and discovery which goes on with far more elaborate technology and virtually reaches into the outer dimensions of space and back. This is one of the most important volumes in the series.

(2-CD set) The Music Machine are one of the most respected and best loved American bands of the 1960s, renowned for their powerful sonic assault and intelligently crafted repertoire. Big Beat's Ultimate Turn On compilation from 2006 anthologised the monochromatically-garbed combo's hit Talk Talk era, and now we turn our focus to the latter half of the Music Machine's career...

Whenever he was asked to name his own personal favorite within his long and distinguished oeuvre, Jerry Goldsmith inevitably cited his work on 1977's obscure Ernest Hemingway adaptation Islands in the Stream. A lush, often melancholy score evoking both the serenity and the treachery of the sea, it is undoubtedly Goldsmith's most intimate effort, eschewing the larger-than-life drama and suspense of his best-known soundtracks. Islands in the Stream is above all a showcase for the composer's consummate ability to vividly communicate both the physical and emotional landscape in such simple yet precise strokes -- employing little but a lone French horn, Goldsmith's main theme captures the immense loneliness and solitude of George C. Scott's protagonist, while gentle woodwinds suggest the ocean waves lapping the shore of his island home.

What a wonderful way for me to get started on the Italian prog scene. It was 1993, I was 20, I was getting pretty much fed up with anything mainstream.

"I'll Be Your Rainbow is the perfect example of how a classic '70s soul album should sound. Great songs (from Bobby and Motown hit-maker Vernon Bullock), wonderful orchestration (courtesy of Motown legend Paul Riser and the TK hit machine's Mike Lewis), and stellar musicians and singers (including The Jones Girls on background vocals) combine wonderfully with Bobby's impassioned vocals.

David Borden was is in the room where the pitch wheel was invented, when it happened. He was one of the first people to beta-test Bob Moog’s Modular Synthesizer systems and MiniMoog instruments. His Earthquack Records imprint inspired Mimi Johnson to begin the legendary Lovely Records label with Robert Ashley. Borden formed the first all synthesizer ensemble, Mother Mallard’s Portable Masterpiece Company, in 1969 after Bob Moog graciously lent out his prototype synthesizers and allowed them to be blown up and repaired repeatedly in the process of learning patching techniques.
