Hjalmar Borgstrom - Thora pa Rimol

The opera “Thora paa Rimol” represents one of composer Hjalmar Borgstrøm’s (1864-1925) central works. Although respected by his contemporaries, Borgstrøm has not remained a household name with the general public. The Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and the TrønderOpera Chorus’ rendition of “Thora paa Rimol” will do much to re-establish Borgstrøm’s standing as a central Norwegian composer. “Thora paa Rimol” employs a theme that is well suited for an opera; Norse saga. The story that creates the opera’s basis centres on Olav Tryggvason’s assumption of power from Earl Håkon. Through clearly defined elements in music and text, Borgstrøm draws vivid and defined portraits of Olav Tryggvason’s noble-mindedness, the slave Kark’s cowardly nature and Earl Håkon’s vacillation between weakness and nobility. Borgstrøm has created a rich drama that sees lyrics and music merging to form a rewarding and cohesive opera.

A composer speaking about his own problems is also speaking about the problems of mankind," asserted Schoenberg. "I was made a revolutionary in spite of myself," said Stravinsky. Hindemith spoke of a forthcoming "big battle over new music", and added, "the need will be to prove whether or not the music of our day, including my own, is capable of survival." Today these composers are regarded as being three of the most seminal figures in music history in the first half of the 20th century. Meanwhile a composer at the end of the same century, Rolf Wallin, has written music that portrays "the dancing dynamics of the universe", where nothing is stable and everything is volatile. The works featured on this album by these four composers reflect the universal and timeless balance between tradition and innovation, and the Royal Norwegian Navy Band under Ingar Bergby illuminate this balance in their recordings of these works, and breathe new life into this music.

Though as central to his compositional career as his piano works, Grieg's choral works are rarely heard outside his native land and even more rarely recorded. This splendid 2007 BIS disc with Grete Pedersen leading the Norske Solistkor (the Norwegian Soloists' Choir) adds 13 a cappella pieces to the international Grieg catalog. Some are intimately emotional secular works like "Margaret's Cradle Song," while others are grander scared works like the setting of "Ave, Maris Stella." Some like "As I Lay Down So Late" were originally composed for the medium, while others were adapted for the medium either by the composer from one of his songs as in "Last Spring" or by the conductor from one of his piano pieces as in "Once Upon a Time" from the Opus 71 set of Lyric Pieces.

There are literally hundreds of muzak albums by the likes of 101 Strings, Ferrante & Teicher, and Mitch Miller. Each album has a theme, like 101 Strings Plays the Ramones or Ferrante & Teicher Salute Root Boy Slim & the Sex Change Band. Most of them are easily ignored. Every so often, however, a true gem arises from the fog. Norwegian Wood by Trio Rococo is such a gem. Niels Eje (oboe and oboe d'amore), Inge Mulvad (cello), and Berit Spaelling (harp) have translated 15 John Lennon/Paul McCartney songs and one George Harrison song lovingly and meticulously. These familiar pieces take on a whole new texture in the hands of these gifted musicians...

Beecham had an exquisite ear for detail, and his Peer Gynt has more fantasy — more subtlety, too — than anyone else's: Ase s Death and Anitra 's Dance are simply magical. So is the Symphonic Dance, and if In Autumn and the variations occasionally seem a litde thin musically, Beecham makes amends with keenness of attack and eloquent phrasing. The orchestra is superb and the transfers (which give us the variations in stereo for the first time), excellent.

Years ago Russell and Dave Alvin, were tagged as the architects of what came to be known as "Americana" music, with their Merle Haggard tribute "Tulare Dust," the record which initiated the Americana charts in America, and remained number one for a year. Aztec Jazz moves Americana into a new realm. For over three decades and 28 album releases Tom Russell has continued to live up to his status as (re: Washington Post) "one of the greatest songwriters of our time."
