Frank Millers - Ronin (1987) TPB
English | CBR | 260 pages | 138.57 MB

An overlooked classic from Frank Miller. Like Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, and Garth Ennis; when you hear the name Frank Miller the entire list of classic comic book tales comes to mind. From Daredevil, to Batman, down to Sin City and in the thick of the battle of 300; Miller has crafted classics with what seems like relative ease. Ronin is not only a change of pace for fans of Miller's more notable works, but it is also one of his finest. A disgraced and masterless samurai, a ronin, finds himself reborn in the lawless and oppressive world of 21st century New York, which has become a technological jungle. Also reborn is the demon Agat; whom the Ronin died fighting in an effort to avenge the death of his master. I don't want to say any more for fear of spoiling the story, but I will go as far as to say that Ronin packs in all the pulpy dialogue, conflicts, action, and artwork that anyone remotely familiar with Frank Miller would come to expect. If there's any real negative to Ronin, than it's the ending, which may leave some scratching their heads, and others wondering just what Miller was trying to really get across here. That aside, Ronin is an overlooked classic from the great Frank Miller, and if you're a fan who has never given this book a chance, you should definitely pick this up.

Ronin around the world: a powerful and atmospheric concert recording with music captured in Germany, Austria, Holland, England, and Japan, a double-album which transmits the live impact of Nik Bärtsch’s band and its enveloping modular groove music of interlocking rhythms. It’s also a set that marks the end of an era and the transition into a new one. These are the last recordings of Ronin with Björn Meyer’s elegantly-leaping bass guitar as one of the lead voices, and Bärtsch views the album as partly a tribute to Meyer’s long tenure with the band. New bassist Thomy Jordi, meanwhile, makes an impressive entrance on “Modul 55”, but it’s most often the whole band, as a unified field of force, that commands the listener’s attention.

A powerful remake of a popular jidai geki (period drama) that was first filmed in 1928, Ronin Gai also marks the final appearance of Shintaro Katsu, the Japanese actor best known for his title role in the long-lasting Zatoichi film series. Also known as Street of the Masterless Samurai, this intense chambera (swordplay) drama is set on the outskirts of Edo in the 1830s, where aimless Ronin waste what's left of their obsolete careers, drinking sake in a shabby restaurant where prostitutes provide cheap sex while hoping to marry out of their miserable fate. When a rogue band of the local shogun's retainers start slashing the prostitutes in a ruthless, self-righteous murder spree, the drunken samurai must sober up and retaliate, leading to a climactic showdown in which the traitorous bodyguard named Bull (played by Katso) gets a chance to redeem himself in true samurai fashion. Produced to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the death of Japanese film pioneer Shozo Makino, Ronin Gai is primarily a tale of downtrodden people finding new purpose and hope amidst severe disadvantage, but director Kazuo Kuroki is equally adept with nihilist attitude and swift, bloody action sequences that are unflinchingly violent and not for the faint of heart. (Future cult director Takashi Miike served as assistant director here; he obviously learned from the experience.) Parallels to Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven are readily apparent, but Ronin Gai came first, and it's a must-see for fans of the samurai genre. Details

Not everyone will love this music. It's not jazz, it doesn't exactly swing, and it may be too in-your-face for those who prefer more delicate realms of introspection. People who hate the minimalisms of Reich and Philip Glass may find Bartsch's compositions repetitive. But anyone who is interested in muscular new sounds that seem both timeless and very contemporary should check it out.

The year is 1997. Manhattan Island is now a heavily guarded maximum-security prison, where the scum of the earth have converged. When Air Force One crash-lands in Manhattan, the president (Donald Pleasence) is held hostage by its denizens. One-eyed mercenary Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) is strong-armed into rescuing the chief executive. He is aided, not always willingly, by a tough gal (Adrienne Barbeau) and a manic cab driver (Ernest Borgnine). Escape from New York was followed by a sequel of sorts in 1996, Escape From L.A., again starring Kurt Russell.
