Following through on the roots-rock leanings of Cowboy Outfit, Nick Lowe delivered the delightful The Rose of England. While some of the material is still rather lightweight - "Lucky Dog" and "Bo Bo Skediddle" are defiant and thoroughly entertaining throwaways - much of the record is clever and charming, delivered with laidback confidence from the Cowboy Outfit.

Nick the Knife is a 1982 album by Nick Lowe. The album was Lowe's third solo LP, and his first since the 1981 breakup of his band Rockpile. However, the record still has several Rockpile ties, as Lowe's former bandmates Billy Bremner and Terry Williams play on the album. In addition, Lowe does a slowed-down remake of the Rockpile song "Heart"; the original version can be found on the band's album Seconds of Pleasure sung by Bremner. Nick the Knife reached #50 on the Billboard 200, and #99 on the UK album charts. No singles from the album made the US or UK charts, although in Canada "Stick It Where The Sun Don't Shine" hit the Top 40.

Lowe may have only one true hit to his credit (1979's "Cruel To Be Kind"), but he is one of rock's most respected artists. Across 86 tracks, THE DOINGS traces his transformation from self-styled "Jesus of Cool" and purveyor of "pure pop for now people" into a bluesy roots-rocker and perennial critics' darling. The fun-filled pure pop on disc 1 was recorded between 1976 and 1982, skipping recordings from Lowe's tenure as bassist/singer in Brinsley Schwarz, Rockpile, and Little Village. The disc kicks off with "So It Goes", Lowe's 1976Stiff Records debut single, and collects obscure B-sides (the rocking "Shake That Rat") and sublime power pop numbers ("I Love The Sound Of Breaking Glass", "American Squirm"). Discs two and three explore Lowe's 1983-1998 output and find him moving away from boisterous garage rock ("Half A Boy And Half A Man") in favour of reflective roots rock ("Shelly My Love"). A fourth disc of unreleased studio recordings andlive tracks will be of greatest interest to Lowe's dedicated cult following. Details

A few years after their foray into musicals, the Pet Shop Boys, who are quite possibly disco-pop's most intellectual act, have returned with another project: a live score to Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin. Battleship Potemkin was a silent film made in Leninist Russia in 1925, and tells the (somewhat idealized) story of a revolt among sailors of the Czar's Black Sea fleet. Given the Pet Shop Boys' history of playing with Leninist imagery (take, for example, the lyrics to 'West End Girls'), they were a suitably apt choice to do a live score to this film.
