Carlo Tessarini da Rimini (ca.1690-ca.1767) is one of the 'forgotten generation' of Italian Baroque masters who made their name and sometimes their fortune outside their native land. Tessarini was popular in England and the Netherlands, where both the public and publishers rated him on a par with Vivaldi and Albinoni. Born around 1690 into a wealthy shipping family, he soon left Rimini to study in Venice, leaving the city in the early 1730s for Urbino. The Op.12 set on this disc were dedicated to the powerful Cardinale Annibale Albani of Urbino, the eldest son of Pope Clement XI. After a long period as leader of the opera orchestra at the Teatro Valle in Rome, he managed (with his generous family helping out -- they owned a publishing company!) to enter into a type of co-publishing deal with a leading French publisher who distributed and sold his music. And so his reputation spread across Europe. There followed long spells of living and working in London, Nijmegen, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Groningen, and finally Arnhem, where he appears to have died in around 1767 at the age of 76. At the time of his death he was still an active composer, working and performing to his adoring public. He produced 19 collections of sonatas, concertos, symphonies and capriccios. There is also a sizeable body of work of uncertain provenance attributed to him. Stylistically, he is somewhere between Vivaldi and the galant style of Locatelli. He is a remarkable figure as he was one of the first composers to realise the importance of publishing and distribution of music and teaching material -Telemann was the other contemporaneous example- without which music became lost without trace after the composer's death.

The concerto grosso form was popularized by Corelli, and Locatelli’s Op 1 is a marvellous example of the genre: its solid craftsmanship, imaginative textures and exciting virtuosity bringing it into the top rank. These works are ravishingly performed here by The Raglan Baroque Players, Nicholas Kraemer and soloist Elizabeth Wallfisch.

The twenty sonatas on this recording show Handel writing for the professional musicians of his London opera orchestra; they demand considerable skill and stamina both from the soloist and the continuo. Prominent bass parts give the sonatas a contrapuntal strength and vitality, and Handel keeps the elements of display and purely musical argument in admirable balance in these works. For this reason, they are among the most attractive Baroque solo sonatas and deserve their lasting popularity.

Ushering in a new golden era for the flute as solo instrument, Jean-Pierre Rampal secured his place in the classical music firmament as the greatest flautist of the modern era. Over 25 years (1954-1982), the French virtuoso’s fruitful collaboration with Erato grew into a truly exceptional achievement in recording history: an encyclopedia of flute music in vital performances that have remained the benchmark for generations. The first complete reissue of these recordings represents the most important collection ever dedicated to a single flautist. After all, it was Jean-Pierre Rampal that taught us to love the flute.

Tomaso Albinoni is one of the greatest composers of the Italian Baroque, together with Vivaldi, Corelli and Locatelli. The greatest part of his works however is mostly unknown. Therefore, Brilliant Classics plans to issue a substantial series of his works, starting with this first recording of the complete Trattenimenti Armonici. A series of 12 sonatas, for violin, cello and instrumental ensemble, in Sonata da Chiesa style: small scale, alternating fast and slow movements. The violin has a leading role in the typically Italian vocal writing of the solo part.

Philippe Pierlot and his superb Ricercar Consort present tributes to both Corelli and Lully with the two Apothéoses by François Couperin, written in the memory of Arcangelo Corelli and Jean-Baptiste Lully respectively. Behind them is an aesthetic programme: they are a plea for the mixture of the Italian and the French style, the so-called goûts réunis. The ensemble consists of Marc Hantaï and Georges Barthel (transverse flutes), François Fernandez and Sophie Gent (violins), Philippe Pierlot (viola da gamba), Eduardo Egüez (theorbo and guitar) and François Guerrier (harpsichord). Both pieces are given lively and expressive interpretations: Couperin's Apothéoses are in the tradition of the tombeau, and therefore the Tombeau de Monsieur de Lully by Jean-Féry Rebel fits well into the programme and is performed in between the two pieces by Couperin.
