This recording of one of Haydn’s greatest masterpieces is not to be missed. Those who are familiar with Colin Davis’s recordings of the Haydn London Symphonies, made over 30 years ago with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, will know that he has a special affection for this composer’s music and unfailingly communicates his love of it to both performers and listeners alike. Surprisingly this would appear to be the first time that he has recorded Haydn’s Creation, but it has been worth the wait.

London Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Chorus, Sir Colin Davis
Sally Matthews (Soprano)
Dietrich Henschel (Baritone)
Ian Bostridge (Tenor)

Many of Sir Colin Davis' recent releases on LSO Live have featured his favorite choral works, including Beethoven's Mass in C, Mozart's Requiem and Handel's Messiah. The next release in the series features Haydn's masterpiece Die Schopfung (The Creation) - a work that Davis has (surprisingly) never previously recorded. Sir Colin is joined by a sensational set of singers for his recording. Soprano Sally Matthews is joined by Ian Bostridge and Dietrich Henschel. Having been inspired by Handel's oratorios whilst in London, Haydn set Die Schopfung to a text originally intended for his predecessor. With bright orchestration and vivid imagery, Haydn's account of the world's creation confirmed that he too had mastered the art of musical dramatics and composed a work that is celebrated as one of the masterpieces of the classical era.

The London symphonies, sometimes called the Salomon symphonies after the man who introduced London to Joseph Haydn, were composed by Joseph Haydn between 1791 and 1795. They can be categorized into two groups: Symphonies No.93 through 98, which were composed during Haydn's first visit to London, and Symphonies No.99 through 104, composed in Vienna and London for Haydn's second London visit.

Pellegrini-Quartet

n 1772 the "Sun Quartets" op. 20 (owing their name to the title page of Hummel's Amsterdam edition of 1779) concluded the astonishing series of eighteen works with which Haydn laid the foundations of the classical string quartet. Ten years would pass before the next series of such works followed with the Quartets op. 33. According to the early estimation of the Wiener Zeitung of 1801, Haydn's op. 20 was a decisive factor in the establishment of the composer's fame. Together with the Quartets op.17 composed during the previous year, the Quartets op. 20 operated on a level that no Haydn contemporary could even come close to matching (Charles Rosen), and it would not be exaggerating to rank this collection as one of the most manifold, most experimental, and most enthralling of the eighteenth century
