Genre: nu-jazz Total playing: 71:02

Having played on ACT albums by everyone from Nils Landgren (featured here) and Viktoria Tolstoy to the late Albert Mangelsdorff, drummer Wolfgang Haffner is adept at tailoring his percussive contributions to individual requirements. His own tastes, however, judged by the twelve compositions he's included on this, his debut album as a leader, lead him to that mix of ambient sounds, minimalism and drum-programme music frequently described as nu jazz.

Genre: Jazz, Fusion | Label: ACT Music

The title "Heart of the Matter" of Wolfgang Haffner's latest album is definitely more than just a play on words. For Germany's most highly decorated drummer, including the Echo Jazz 2010 award, his profession has been "a matter of the heart" ever since he began his career at the tender age of 18 in Albert Mangelsdorff's band. The work that followed for innumerable German and international stars and his participation on more than 400 albums bears witness to this. But only since he started recording his own albums as an ACT artist has he felt close to the "heart of the matter": "I don't see myself as just a drummer anymore, but as a universal musician. I compose, arrange, seek out and enter worlds of sound. That is my thing." Details

New Urban Jazz abbreviated Nu jazz music, connecting elements of jazz with other styles such as funk, soul, different styles of electronic music and improvisation. The term appeared in the late 1990s, although the style of music began to take shape before. Music in the style of nu jazz varies from combining live instruments with housey bits to align miniorkestrovoy jazz improvisation with electronic music. Nyudzhazovaya music usually involves more electronic elements than its relative of acid jazz, which is closer to the funk, soul and rhythm and blues roots. Details

Carmen Cuesta - Loeb set the pace for her album "Peace Of Mind" by working together with such top studio musicians as Chuck Loeb, Will Lee, Wolfgang Haffner and Bob James. Icing on the cake for her brand of "sophisticated pop" are the solos delivered by such jazz stars as Toots Thielemans, Bill Evans and Till Bronner. Alongside a number of her own compositions in a relaxed, atmospheric vein, jewels like the heart-rendering title song "Peace Of Mind", the catchy "Paralelo" or the romantic ballad "Bells", there are two cover versions in particular that stand out on the list of tracks.

Great Conductors of the 20th Century celebrates the so many superstar performers of the last century, conductors who collectively shaped the course of classical music.
Sixty volumes were planned with hopes for even more. Unfortunately it seems that only forty will be issued. Thus, rather than a proud celebration of the full wealth of this keystone of classical art, the truncated result is tinged with regret for what might have been. Details

Since 1971, saxophonist Klaus Doldinger has mostly recorded creative fusion under the group name of "Passport." This Atlantic CD features his soprano and occasional tenor backed by a five-piece rhythm section comprised of some top German musicians. The music, all composed by Doldinger, effectively mixes together R&B, rock, pop and even some straightahead jazz into an impressive brew with Doldinger often extending himself with challenging solos. Several of the melodies are memorable, there are a wide variety of moods and grooves covered and the CD is proof that fusion can be played with imagination.
