Natural-born archivist that he is, it is no surprise that Jack White would eventually choose to curate his own career. Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016 is his first attempt at offering an alternative narrative of his own career, one that places his quieter side as the connecting thread running from the White Stripes through the Raconteurs to his solo work. It's a tactic that diminishes some of the conventional notions about White, particularly that most of his music is grounded in the blues. Despite Greil Marcus' mention of blues icon Son House in the liner notes, most of the music on Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016 bears stronger ties to country and folk, even British Invasion pop; the latter is evident not only on the singsong whimsy of "We're Going to Be Friends" but the cinematic melancholy of "Forever for Her (Is Over for Me)."

Tony Joe White - Deep Cuts (2008)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 329 Mb (incl 5%) | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 124 Mb (incl 5%) | Scans ~ 140 Mb
Genre: Swamp Rock, Blues Rock, R&B | Label: Swamp Records | # 7708343-2 | Time: 00:51:46

Revered as one of the originators of swamp rock, Tony Joe White has recast a number of his classic songs on Deep Cuts, proving that time has no jurisdiction over funky. His signature groove, starting from his 1969 hit "Polk Salad Annie," is what he uses to paint a vivid picture of the world he experienced growing up, where poverty provided unity between otherwise divided races and bad-news women were sometimes too good to pass up. Tony Joe cut the tracks with his son Jody providing a rich palette of beats and loops, utilizing both digital and live drums, strings, organs, and the unmistakable timbre of his guitar. White's time-worn baritone is positively haunting, like a restless spirit conjured by the funk that was always the core of his music.

There's no denying Australian heavy rock trio Wolfmother has been raised on rock -- specifically, raised on '70s rock. Problem is, from all appearances on their eponymous debut, they made their journey into the past via the twin gateway drugs of the White Stripes and Queens of the Stone Age, and once they dug back to the original Zeppelin and Sabbath texts (stopping along the way for some Soundgarden discs and maybe, for lyrical inspiration, Yes and Rush), they indulged so much it screwed with their sense of aesthetics. They threw everything and anything together, not bothering with minor problems like how their frenzied retro-rock doesn't quite support songs with titles like "The White Unicorn"...

The Dead Weather - Horehound (2009)
Alternative rock, blues-rock | EAC rip, log & cue | FLAC, split tracks | 44 min | 256 MB | Label: Third Man | Released July 14, 2009

No sooner does he establish his White Stripes side project, the Raconteurs, as a fully fledged band, than the restless Jack White unveils his latest project, the Dead Weather. He has already described this record as "gothic blues". Here he hooks up with Alison Mosshart, singer of Anglo-American duo the Kills. She fronts the band with White ostensibly taking a backseat by playing drums, but his influence is everywhere; from the band name to the album title, a typically wry choice of word that turns an innocuous plant into an intimation of foreboding. The Dead Weather are given continuity with White's other musical activities through bassist Jack Lawrence, a carry-over from the Raconteurs, and rounded out by multi-instrumentalist Dean Fertita. The project came together through jam sessions that followed the end of a Raconteurs tour in 2008 (on which the Kills played as support) and was recorded over 15 days at the HQ of White's Third Man label in Nashville. Elle King brings the debut album. Comes with lyrics and a description. Special Feature - Bonus Track: Japan only bonus tracks. Existing at the intersection of the two major retro-roots movements of the new millennium -- the beehived, swinging '60s soul of Amy Winehouse and the bluesy roar of the White Stripes -- Elle King's debut, Love Stuff, feels like a record that should've happened prior to 2015. Surprisingly, King is the only musician to mine this territory but she's not quite stuck in the past, whether that means the 20th century source or the canny revivals of Winehouse and Jack White.
