For his seventh album as leader, Paris-based bassist Chris Jennings allies himself with like-minded adventurers in koto player Mieko Miyazaki and drummer Patrick Goraguer. The common denominator between the musicians is openness to music that transcends borders and labels. Miyazaki plays in guitarist Nguyen Le's Saiyaki along with tabla player Prabhu Edouard; Goraguer—a regular in Jennings quartet—has played with bassist Richard Bona and singer Fema Kuti, while Jennings's collaborations include oud player Dhafer Yousef and saxophonist Lee Konitz. The idiom that the three converse in is, perhaps unsurprisingly, a hybrid of jazz and roots music, though their rich vocabulary and flexible grammar is as unique as it is captivating.

Drummer Billy Cobham played some of the most exciting music of the 1970s. As a member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra and as a leader of his own bands, Cobham was at the forefront of the jazz fusion movement and was a prime mover during its glory days. He was still at it as of 2007, and proved more than capable of keeping up with both the new breed of fusion players and fellow veterans. Assisted by such stalwarts as Jan Hammer, Jeff Berlin, and Brian Auger, Cobham storms, crackles, and soars through a dazzling brace of dynamic, concise compositions on DRUM 'N' VOICE 2.

Generally acclaimed as fusion's greatest drummer, Billy Cobham's explosive technique powered some of the genre's most important early recordings -- including groundbreaking efforts by Miles Davis and the Mahavishnu Orchestra -- before he became an accomplished bandleader in his own right. At his best, Cobham harnessed his amazing dexterity into thundering, high-octane hybrids of jazz complexity and rock & roll aggression.

Excellent addition to any prog rock music collection.
WOW! This record is just a bit less good than Spartacus: mostly, it sounds very similar to Spartacus. The weak point on this album is Barry Palmer's lead vocals, although bearable. "I believe", sounding a bit pop, has good rhythmic piano, Fender Rodes, choir parts and some floating keyboards. The first part of the marvelous "Day in a life" has Fender Rhodes and background floating keyboards sounding like the Gary Wright's "Dream Weaver" track; the second part has a very progressive & melodic piano a la Rick Wakeman: absolutely GRAND; finally, the third part sounds like on the Spartacus album: rhythmic piano, VERY spacy moog, fast drums and bass. The epic "History of mystery part 1" starts with another excellent piano part, followed by heroic & catchy keyboards like on the Spartacus album: Hammond organ and moog; so, this tracks sounds like the best ELP of the early 70's!

Bad DNA, Marty Friedman's 2010 offering, is a hard one to place in the discography of the great Marty Friedman. I bought it on impulse again, buying it the day it came out in Japan. It seems he took the experimental electronic influences scattered scarcely across his post-Megadeth albums (think Cheer Girl Rampage) and incorporated them further into his guitar-driver music. In addition, the liner notes say that title track Bad DNA, Weapons of Ecstasy, and Glorious Accident are written by Friedman, Matsuura. I suspect it involves Takeomi Matsuura, who does some sequencing work on this album too and not the well-known Japanese pop singer Aya Matsuura. Anyway, on to the content!
