If you're looking for an especially high energy Buddy Rich recording, then you've found it. I especially enjoy the trumpet section of this band. LA trumpet player Charley Davis is heard here on lead, soon after leaving Indiana University. He remains one of the top lead trumpet players in the business. Another top LA studio trumpet player and IU grad Larry Hall is also in the trumpet section on this recording. I only wish that this recording included a Charley Davis rendition of "Something", heard on the "Stick It" album, performed by Lin Biviano. "Time Check", "Backwoods Sideman" and "Nutville" are my favorites. Also great work by current Berklee faculty member Greg Hopkins and Toronto's tenor legend Pat LaBarbera. Details

When it came to technique, speed, power, and the ability to put together incredible drum solos, Buddy Rich lived up to the billing of "the world's greatest drummer." Although some other drummers were more innovative, in reality none were in his league even during the early days. A genius, Buddy Rich started playing drums in vaudeville as "Traps, the Drum Wonder" when he was only 18 months old; he was completely self-taught. Rich performed in vaudeville throughout his childhood and developed into a decent singer and a fine tap dancer.

Born in New York City, I spent most of my adolescent years in a suburb of Detroit. When the Beatles hit the scene in the early 60s, my chums and I took turns emulating the Fab Four with the help of vinyl recordings and broom stick instruments. This was truly an exciting time. It wasn't long before I saved up and bought myself a solid-body electric guitar adn a cheap amp, teamed up with some chums and started my first rock band...

He may have ultimately become best-known in the progressive rock world for his ongoing work with King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, Stick Men and the Crimson ProjeKct, but 68 year-old bassist and stick player Tony Levin has no shortage of jazz credentials, playing with everyone from Gary Burton and Mike Mainieri to Chuck Mangione and Buddy Rich from the late '60s through the early '70s. Art Pepper mostly sticks to standards on this Discovery LP, but he brings out new life in the veteran songs, particularly on such ballads as "Round Midnight," "What's New" and "Besame Mucho." With the assistance of pianist Russ Freeman, bassist Bob Magnusson and drummer Frank Butler, the great altoist (who is heard just prior to signing an exclusive contract with the Galaxy label) is also in top form on such pieces as "What Is This Thing Called Love" and "I'll Remember April." An excellent (if not quite essential) release.

By 1952, Teddy Wilson's flawless swing style had already been fully formed for at least 17 years, and it would not change at all during the remaining three decades of his life. Wilson's performances were predictably excellent, but predictable nonetheless. This limited-edition five-CD set has all of the pianist's Verve trio recordings, which includes six-and-a-half former LPs (the half was an appearance at the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival), a set only released previously in Japan, and a live date that had never come out before.

I have a collection of 135 titles (142 CDs) issued by Goldmine/Soul Supply record company. This is not a box set but rather it is a collection of albums that are similar in that they all are rare soul compilations by the same company. There are some tracks that are on more than one album but considering the scope and magnitude of this collection, the number of duplicated tracks is small. Some CDs have good artwork, some have none, most have some artwork of varying quality. All are 320 CBR MP3 and are fully tagged. Original post now has added CDs.

This critically acclaimed album was the first time the music of Stan Kenton and his orchestra had been performed since his passing, and the last time so many of the original Kenton stars would gather together to record in the studio again. This pivotal project, gave impetus, to countless live tributes to Stan Kenton's music the world over, since its release in 1987. It was the trust in Paul Cacia as a producer, why so many stars participated, garnering accolades for the production quality, as well as the trumpet work of Paul Cacia. Details
