First Base was British hard rock group Babe Ruth's biggest success, both in terms of popular and critical acclaim. This LP defined an interesting junction between hard rock and progressive rock. The two driving forces behind this album were guitarist Alan Shackloc, who wrote most of the material, and vocalist Janita Haan, who came out as the perfect balance between Janis Joplin and Robert Plant. Gene Loves Jezebel - From The Mouths Of Babes: Some of the best of Gene Loves Jezebel

Not quite new wave, nor Goth, or even pop, Gene Loves Jezebel falls into that catagory of hybrid. Having been a fan for 15 years, I am forever on the hunt for c.d.s, comps, etc., and found that most are out of print, including the excellent Kiss of Life and Immigrant albums. But this collection culls the best from their six albums, including the aforementioned ones. As expected, Desire is on this c.d., but also songs from 'Promise' (Bruises, Upstairs) and 'Immigrant' (Steven). All the tracks are prime examples of how this band really was during the late eighties. My faves are Bruises, Sweetest Thing, Twenty Killer Hurts and Jealous, but overall this is the best album you could buy as an introduction to the band. You will wonder why they weren't bigger than they were!.

Foghat - Fool For The City (1975) [MFSL '2008]

Rock / Blues-Rock / Hard Rock / Boogie Rock | Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab # UDSACD 2037

Undoubtedly Foghat's finest album, 1975's Fool For The City, could cruise along on the strength of the band's biggest and best single, "Slow Ride", alone. In addition to that choogling stoner classic, however, the record also finds the bluesy British rock group offering up the fist-pumping, arena-worthy title track and a oddly funky version of Robert Johnson's "Terraplane Blues", not to mention the uncharacteristically melancholy "Take It or Leave It". Throughout the eclectic song selection, frontman "Lonesome" Dave Peverett leads the ensemble with assurance, making sure that even the lesser-known tunes are engaging (see the rollicking "My Babe"). Although definitive Rock is the best Foghat collection, this disc is the group's true calling card. Details

The Rides - Pierced Arrow (2016)

Studio Master, Official Digital Download, Provogue

Supertrio the Rides – Stephen Stills, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Barry Goldberg – return May 6 with Pierced Arrow, their first release since their debut album Can’t Get Enough tapped into Blues Rock Review’s Top 20 Albums of 2013. Like Can’t Get Enough, Pierced Arrow is a mixture of originals (like the Stills-penned single “Virtual World”) and covers (like the jaunty “My Babe,” written by Willie Dixon), all played with the technical skill one expects of three seasoned musicians. The biggest takeaway from Pierced Arrow is its unity: while some songs show evidence of each artist’s past projects (especially “Virtual World,” which is reminiscent of Stills’ work with Buffalo Springfield five decades ago), the album as a whole nods to the time the Rides spent touring, performing and writing together as a team.
