Sun Ra Arkestra - Live at Babylon [feat. Marshall Allen] (2015)
MP3 320 kbps CBR | 105:00 min | 252 MB
Genre: Jazz | Label: In & Out

Legendary pianist and bandleader Sun Ra departed from this Earth in 1993 but his cosmic legacy lives on via this excellent live set featuring his Arkestra recorded at the Babylon Club, Istanbul in May 2014. Now directed by ninety year old alto saxophonist / flautist Marshall Allen, the music reflects the imperturbable spirit of freedom and creativity of a band which has existed for some six decades. Also on board for this particular astral journey are long established members of the Arkestra crew including Vincent Chancey (french horn), Knoel Scott (alto saxophone), Elson Nascimento (percussion) together with relative newcomers Tara Middleton (vocals & violin) and Farid Barron, the first to occupy the pianists chair since Sun Ra's passing. once I was a human being,
but I'm no longer a human being.
I am a living dream,
I'm scratch, the dreammaker,
I make my life out of dream,
and life is a dream, I'm shure.
and I am a dream
I am not a human being,
I bleed blood,
but I'm not a human being,
I am a living dream.

Voodoo Lounge confirmed that the Stones could age gracefully, but it never sounded modern; it sounded classicist. With its successor, Bridges to Babylon, Mick Jagger was determined to bring the Rolling Stones into the '90s, albeit tentatively, and hired hip collaborators like the Dust Brothers (Beck, Beastie Boys) and Danny Saber (Black Grape) to give the veteran group an edge on their explorations of drum loops and samples. Of course, the Stones are the Stones, and no production is going to erase that...

Arguably the most influential live reggae album ever, Babylon by Bus captures Bob Marley and the Wailers during the European leg of their Kaya tour in the spring of 1978. The success of this set was not entirely unexpected, however. If the universal and widespread acclaim of Live! -- their first concert recording -- was an indicator, all involved knew that a Bob Marley & the Wailers performance contained unique energies and a vibe all of its own. When a trend is hot, you can safely assume that most major labels will want to get in on the action. In the late 1980s, glossy pop-metal was hot -- and Arista tried to get in on the action by signing Babylon A.D., whose self-titled debut album draws on such influences as Def Leppard, Quiet Riot, and Bon Jovi.

On Chant Down Babylon, Bob Marley's master tapes meet the next generation. Marley hardly needs help selling records, so these studio-engineered duets may reflect an honest attempt at linking his musical legacy with contemporary artists. Even those sympathetic to the concept, though, should wonder if it's wise to substitute new backing tracks for the original sinuous grooves of "Concrete Jungle" and "Rebel Music." Details
