Essentially the Allman Brothers Band's Gold collection is an expanded version of both the Universal Masters and 20th Century Masters collections. It contains two discs that total 30 cuts and cover the band's catalog from 1969's Allman Brothers Band to 1975's Enlightened Rogues. There are five cuts from the first album, including the original studio version of "Whipping Post," and four from Idlewild South, including the studio read of "Midnight Ride." The cuts from At Fillmore East number four with the inclusion of the 13-minute "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," and five from Eat a Peach, including "Melissa," "Blue Sky," and "Ain't Wasting Time No More." Five cuts come from Brothers and Sisters and, yes, "Ramblin' Man" and "Jessica" are among them...

If truth be told, the Allman Brothers Band have always been the quintessential American rock band, shaping a rootsy mix of blues, jazz, country, and rock into an elegant, nuanced sound that single-handedly created what became known as Southern rock. Full of beautiful dual guitar leads and driven by double drummers, and possessing a lead singer who, when he was on his game, had as much soul as anyone around, the Allman Brothers Band were also an improvisational band who found all kinds of new corners in their classic catalog when they played live, no matter what the configuration of the band was at the time.

Allman Brothers fans are a hardy lot. For years, make that decades, they have been inundated with reissues of the same material with teasers thrown in, or have been given truly bizarre compilations such as the Madacy ripoff entitled Essential, which didn't include many of the band's biggest hits and on its second disc provided a straight reissue of Enlightened Rogues. The Deluxe Edition of Eat a Peach is something different, however. For those who have been in the depths of confusion about the various Fillmore East reissues -- whether the straight At Fillmore East album or the Fillmore Concerts set -- this version of Eat a Peach, fully and beautifully remastered, does hold a bit of a treasure trove, though the word is that the second disc has been oft bootlegged. A good if not ideal one-disc best-of by the venerable American institution, this set has all the hits (including Greg's solo "Midnight Rider") and studio versions of most of the concert favorites (translation: don't expect the usually epic "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed"). Interestingly, for a band that first made its mark as a contemporary blues band, not much of the material here is blues per se ("Whipping Post" being the obvious exception), so if you're considering buying this you might want to check out the previously available DECADE OF HITS: 1969-1979, another one-disc best-of that gives a more well-rounded view of the band's music. The show was Great! This is my favorite line-up so far for the band- but I always say that. Greg looked and sounded super- singing and playing. He is a classic blues rock musician. Butch, Jaimoe and Marc are the best! Rico sat in for Butch on one tune as well. Way to go Rico... Marc has settled in solid with the band. Tazzz... Oteil had some crazy sounds coming out after his scat solo. Love the thunder of the bass and drums! Derek looks relaxed when he plays with the ABB.

When I began collecting Allman Brothers live shows someone traded me Capt. Skippers wonderful remaster of this show. I knew immediately I had something special as soon as I heard it. Duane and dickey were so on this night that I was trasported to a place that I had never been musically. I knew Duane Allman was my favorite guitarist, and arguably the best to pick up the instrument, but this show cemented that in my mind. Details
