Uniformology Book Series No. 2

This collection of 51 schematic plates covers each regiment of the Imperial Guard of Czar Nicholas I - the last Russian Czar. After the disastrous war with Japan in 1904-5, Czar Nicholas II ordered sweeping reforms for the Russian Army. Among these, in an attempt to restore pride and confidence was a change in dress uniforms. This change reversed the draconian reforms of Alexander III in 1881 when simple peasant style uniforms were adopted and all cavalry became dragoons. Now the hussars, lancers and cuirassiers returned (the latter converted to dragoons) with distinctive and attractive uniforms. Not least of these affected the Imperial Guard where uniforms reached their apogee in terms of magnificence. Details
Military Headdress: A Pictorial History of Military Headgear from 1660 to 1914 - Rankin (1976)

Colonel Robert H. Rankin "Military Headdress: A Pictorial History of Military Headgear from 1660 to 1914"
Arms & Armour Press/Hippocrene Books | 1976 | ISBN none | 128 pages | PDF | 67.0 MB, 78.0 MB

Of all the various components of military uniform, headdress is perhaps of greatest interest to collectors. One important reason for this is that an item of military headdress is a complete unit in itself, comparatively easy to display and requiring a minimum of care. Fortunately for historians and collectors, since military headdresses are usually made of leather or metal, they have survived when other parts of the uniform have fallen prey to time and moths, or have been worn out through subsequent conversion to civilian use. In the absence of written regulations on the subject, the survival of headdresses is very important, for it provides accurate, first-hand historical information which simply is not available for other parts of military uniform.
