Trio 1790

"You won't find better or more sympathetic playing, so the issue is whether the music is worth it. In a word, yes. In short, an hour and a quarter of some of the greatest masters, excellently performed. The recorded sound is superb." - Chakwim, American Record Guide
This month CPO concludes their complete recording of Joseph Haydn's trios on historical instruments. The works are once again interpreted by the Trio 1790 "with subtle esprit and a solid tone coloration. Nimble and yet noble - not everyone pulls off this feat in Haydn."

Trio 1790 (on period instruments)

Jan Dussek's music is mostly overlooked by today's general public, largely because much of it seems to pander to long-outdated tastes. These five Sonatas for piano, violin, and cello won't do much to alter that perspective, but they nonetheless deserve attention as examples of the work of a respected contemporary of Beethoven, Haydn, and C.P.E. Bach, who was a well-travelled and brilliant keyboardist and composer. The music is nearly on the level of Beethoven's Op. 1 trios in formal sophistication, but without the emotional intensity. Melodies are noticeably "lighter", technical demands less challenging. However, the use of period instruments by the fine musicians of Trio 1790 sheds light on these pieces that reveals some rather charming qualities.

There's beauty aplenty in Parnassus' playing... MDG's recording, by placing the piano (which sounds wonderful throughout) slightly back in the acoustic, achieves a believable and wholly satisfying instrumental balance.

Recordings of Beethoven's Triple Concerto, Op. 56, by a piano trio rather than by a group of virtuosi (a configuration that almost always misunderstands the work) are not abundant. Still rarer are those like the present release by the Storioni Trio, a Dutch group that takes its name from the maker of the 1790s instrument played by the violinist (and strung, like the viola, with gut strings). Pianist Bart van de Roer plays an 1815 Lagasse fortepiano. This recording is part of a series devoted to Beethoven's piano trios, but the Triple Concerto actually is more comfortable in those surroundings than when forced to keep company with the likes of the Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61.

The world has not yet fully discovered the riches of the impressive music libraries and archives of Portugal. They testify to the often complex trajectories followed all over Europe by a repertoire of splendid pieces, many of them showing the extent to which the Italian style had taken root in eighteenth-century Portugal. The superb mass by Pergolesi recorded here is a highly characteristic example. But the ensemble Turicum wanted to go even further in their exploration of this repertoire, accompanying the mass with performances of works by composers now totally (and unjustly) unknown, such as Antonio Gallassi and David Perez, not to mention Leonardo leo, acknowledged in his own time as a supreme master of sacred music.
