Saigon in the 1950s: Mui, a 10-year-old peasant girl, has come to serve a rich family. A discreet, almost invisible spy, she learns their secrets - the husband runs the household to ruin. Ten years later, she moves on to a more modern home where the young master chooses her over his Westernized fiancée. He teaches her to read, but doesn't really remove her from the kitchen. Tran Anh Hung, a Vietnamese raised in Paris, has made a hymn to subservience riddled with symbols. The papaya of the title is picked by servants: when ripe it is a fruit, when green, a vegetable. The name Mui means aroma and Yen-Khé Tran Nu who plays the ripe Mui is certainly sweet. Shot in a studio outside Paris, the enticing settings (a latticed house, a dream kitchen), the subdued tone and insinuating soundtrack make an aesthetic whole that coincides with the current exotica fascination, particularly in France where nostalgia for the colonial past dies hard.

Successful director Lau Kar Leung's (Liu Chia Liang) films usually had a strong traditional emphasis on martial virtue and the importance of family. This is very evident in his kung fu comedy "My Young Auntie", which stars Kara Hui Ying Hung as a young heiress to an esteemed kung fu family embroiled in internal strife. Her gutsy and dauntless performance opposite Lau's starring role as her calm to psychotic elderly nephew-by-marriage, earned Hui the Best Actress Award at the 1982 Hong Kong Film Awards. Details

The first two installments of Andrew Lau's "Young and Dangerous" (Hong Kong/1996) tracked the rise of young punk Chan Ho-nam, his sidekick and their cronies in the Hung Hing triad, where they faced not only opposition from rival clans, but from senior members of their organization unused to the brash upstarts' ways. This time, they go against the Tung Sing triad's sadistic young gun Crow, an ambitious junior gang member who challenges them for control of their turf. Details

TEMPLE OF THE RED LOTUS (1965) is notable for being the first color swordplay film from Hong Kong's Shaw Bros. studio with an emphasis on martial arts. It's a fairly straightforward costume adventure drama about the ongoing battle between a righteous martial arts clan and one devoted to banditry. Shot in widescreen, with a mix of studio sets and picturesque outdoor locations, it's beautiful to behold, especially on the DVD edition from Celestial Pictures released as part of its package of restored, remastered Shaw Bros. titles.

Corpse Mania is far less manic than the title might have one believe. The tale is that of a man, who has a bit of a thing for sex partners that lie very still, who is taken away to a mental hospital after being busted with a maggoty corpse in his bed...the neighbors had complained of a smell, and boy, was there a good reason for one.
But now, it seems that this man is out again, and killings of young working girls (prostitutes) from one particular house of that kind have increased dramatically. And it seems like the killer may well be our recently discharged mental patient.

Two early albums by The Tubes - Young And Rich (1976) and Now (1977) - are being issued as a double CD set. It's a joy to hear these albums, which have been out of print for quite a while. This material is much more interesting than that huge hit, "She's A Beauty," the song the band is most known for. Nothing against "She's A Beauty," of course - I always dug that song - but it's more standard fare compared to the songs on these albums.
