Formed as far back as 66, this group recorded their wild debut album (between Zappa, Soft Machine, Crimson and Purple, if you can picture that) as a fairly international quintet (4 different nationalities between the five of them) before breaking up the following year, with their sax player, John Earle joining Gnidrolog for their classic Lady Lake. Singer-drummer Seyffer then joined the group Medusa, which soon became the second line-up of NDW and by the start of 73, they were recording their "We Never Lost Control", which was more conventional prog (Nektar comes to mind). NDW stayed a very unstable unit with their straight rock album "Only The Dancer" recorded as a quartet in England..

Here's a recording that doesn't introduce its star name until it's more than half over, and works quite well on that account. The understanding of the opening work, Alban Berg's six-movement Lyric Suite (1926), has evolved since scholars discovered a secret copy of the work that, despite its use of the abstract 12-tone system, outlines a quite specific program depicting the course of the composer's extramarital affair with Dorothea Robetin the previous year. The finale was even shown to contain an unsung melody, a setting of a very relevant Baudelaire poem, and to be performable with the melody sung.

The name of Henri Dutilleux (1916–2013) is associated above all with orchestral music. His international reputation originated with the Second Symphony, ‘Le Double’ (premièred in 1959) and was confirmed by works such as Métaboles and the cello concerto Tout un monde lointain… But what about before that? In the centennial year of the composer's birth, the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire and Pascal Rophé present a programme which focusses on works composed before 1954, and offers the opportunity to discover a less familiar but by no means negligible side of Dutilleux's creative activity: songs and music for the theatre and film. Several of the works on this disc are recorded for the first time in these versions, or indeed at all.
