Pianist Otis Spann played in Muddy Waters' band from 1953 to 1970, and was instrumental in creating the electric Chicago blues sound. These 11 tracks were recorded in the mid-'60s by Down Beat magazine editor Pete Welding, and were previously released as Otis Spann's Chicago Blues on Testament Records. This reissue omits the solo Spann material from the original disc and highlights the group recordings featuring S.P. Leary, Johnny Young, James Cotton, Willie Dixon, and Muddy Waters. While not as revolutionary as the records Spann played on with Muddy in the late '50s, you can't deny this lineup of seminal Chicago bluesmen doing what they did best.

The extraordinary success of Chess Records was founded upon the groundbreaking guitar-charged tracks laid down by bluesmen Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Robert Lockwood Jr., Sonny Boy Williamson, and Buddy Guy, plus rockers Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley, with the piano playing a supporting role in their ensembles. But this comprehensive two-CD offering reminds us of the many 88-key blues classics Chess released as well. Popular piano men Eddie Boyd and Willie Mabon are featured here with studio stalwarts Otis Spann and Lafayette Leake. Details

Otis Spann - Ebony And Ivory Blues (2012)
Chicago Blues, Piano Blues | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 02:45:42 | 370 MB
Label: Blues Boulevard | Release Year: 2012

With a style that merged boogie-woogie neatly into the blues, Otis Spann found his first success as the pianist for Muddy Waters, and he played on virtually all of Waters' classic tracks between 1953 and 1969, but as the house pianist for Chicago's Chess Records, he also figured prominently on sides from Willie Dixon, Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Guy, Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter, Junior Wells, Etta James, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, and countless others. Spann was also a fine singer and leader in his own right, and on his own sides, as well. This wonderful two-disc set collects Spann's early solo outings for Chess from the '50s, as well as material from his 1960 sessions in New York with Robert Lockwood, Jr. and St. Louis Jimmy Oden, and rounds things into a complete portrait by including sides he did with B.B. King, James Cotton, Hubert Sumlin, and many others. Spann is regarded as Chicago's greatest post-war blues pianist. This set shows why. Details
