This is a wonderful, warm-hearted, and effortlessly virtuosic live recording by one of the finest living exponents of pre-bop small-ensemble jazz. With pianist Ray Kennedy and bassist Martin Pizzarelli (and on two songs joined by vocalist Grover Kemble), singer and guitarist John Pizzarelli runs through a generally lightweight but thoroughly charming set of standards, homages, funny stories, and the occasional original tune; the fast tunes are light and frothy, the ballads smooth and gentle, and even the moments that are less than utterly inspired work together with the album's highlights to create a very satisfying whole...

Steve Kuhn Trio - Live At Birdland 2007

You have to crank the volume hard to hear Bill Evans's whisper-soft intro to Miles's "So What" on Kind of Blue (Columbia, 1959). When you hear it, though, you know something special this way comes. Steve Kuhn comes from the same school of subtlety as Evans, and Kuhns's one-finger opening to his trio's Blue Note debut, Live at Birdland, achieves the same effect as Evans' hushed chords: a simple beginning to a tremendous set. Are certain recordings destined to have a special fate under a certain star? Whoever hears the reissue of "Live At Birdland Neuburg" today is inevitably faced with this question. In the case of the collaboration of Lee Konitz and Kenny Wheeler, it must have been a star that had never shown brightly, which never showered its charges in bright light for a second (which they would not have wanted anyway) and consequently withheld the magnificent achievement from the rest of the world that was performed on stage in the Hofapothekenkeller in the Bavarian Danube town of Neuburg in December 1999. The time seemed not yet ready for it. Details

On May 23rd, Richie Beirach is 70. Live at Birdland New York demonstrates impressively that the American piano great, far from being in decline, is a lively presence in jazz. Legends Randy Brecker, George Mraz and Billy Hart are on the album, as naturally is violinist Gregor Huebner, Beirach s congenial partner for the past twenty years. Huebner is also celebrating a big birthday on the same day: he is exactly twenty years younger than Beirach. Both men share the imperative to combine the European classical canon with modern jazz, so alongside original compositions there are also works by Bach and Bartók. Details

EXTENDED PLAY was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. With a front line that features saxophone, trombone, and vibraphone/marimba, the Dave Holland Quintet features an immediately identifiable band sound. As for backing, bassist Holland and traps man Billy Kilson provide a push-me-pull-you, supple and responsive rhythm section that is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to accompaniment ideas. The thing that separates the men from the boys in the world of jazz improvisation is listening--when the performers are paying close attention to one another, the creative horizons are all but limitless.

Jazz guitarist/vocalist John Pizzarelli is a technically proficient fretman with a soft voice, charming stage presence, and knack for uptempo swing. Most often performing in a trio setting sans drums, Pizzarelli has found his niche covering jazz standards and American popular song in his own urbane style. The son of journeyman swing guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, John began performing with his father at age 20 and made his recorded debut with his 1983 release, I'm Hip -- Please Don't Tell My Father. Growing up, John was exposed to the music of such jazz luminaries as Les Paul and Django Reinhardt, and he has justifiably drawn comparisons to both of these legendary guitarists...
