Not so much a fusion album as an attempt at mainstream soul and R&B, Street Lady plays like the soundtrack to a forgotten blaxploitation film. Producer/arranger/composer Larry Mizell conceived Street Lady as a concept album to a spirited, independent prostitute, and while the hooker with a heart of gold concept is a little trite, the music uncannily evokes an urban landscape circa the early '70s. Borrowing heavily from Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, and Sly Stone, Donald Byrd and Mizell have created an album that is overflowing with wah-wah guitars, stuttering electric pianos, percolating percussion, soaring flutes, and charmingly anemic, tuneless vocals.

After the stopgap Blues Pills Live in 2015, the international rock quartet returns with Lady in Gold, a proper sophomore full-length. It also marks the studio debut of drummer André Kvarnström. When the title track single was issued, some fans of the Blue Cheer-meets-Janis Joplin attack on the first album were taken aback by its embrace of rocking soul. Some even went so far as to accuse vocalist Elin Larsson of trying to emulate Adele. Evidently, they'd either forgotten -- or didn't know -- that Adele derived her singing style from Aretha Franklin. Larsson is a rabid Queen of Soul fan.

Blues Pills present their second album 'Lady In Gold'. "'Lady Gold' is a character symbolizing death" explains singer Elin Larsson of the intriguing album title "We wanted to get away from the typical stereotype of the Grim Reaper". The mystical and dark references of the album title are echoed throughout a lot of the album - there's the ode to the female 'Keeper Of The Soul' on spiritual sounding title track 'Lady In Gold' and talks of failed salvation from a deceitful messiah in the soul anthem 'Little Boy Preacher'. "Lady in Satin", Billie Holiday's penultimate studio album, is both revered and reviled by her fans. Recorded in February 1958, a mere 17 months before her death at the age of 44, it was said to be her personal favorite. These historical recordings show that her voice was ravaged by hard times, alcohol and drugs. Yet, heartache always informed her art, and she delivers here with unequated poignancy twelve songs that she'd never recorded before. We celebrate Billie's Holiday 100th birthday with this new and ultimate edition of "Lady In Satin", In addition to all of the original album tracks, all newly remixed and mastered in 24-Bit, the first CD is enhanced by the presence of three bonus tracks, including for the very first time a true stereophonic version of "The End Of A Love Affair"

While covering Bob Dylan songs certainly isn't a novel idea, it's potentially a very interesting idea to have contemporary blues musicians perform Dylan compositions indebted to that form, since it's sometimes easy to overlook the deeply traditional roots of his music in light of the vast new territories he opened up...

The received wisdom on the tragic torch singer's later work--of these 35 tracks, six were recorded in 1946 and '47, and the rest in the '50s is that her interpretive skill made up for the collapse of her voice. In fact, the serious cracks in her pitch don't appear until the second disc of this set, and it doesn't approach the febrile croak of Lady in Satin until the END. But she relies on a handful of vocal tricks, and some numbers that had been in her repertoire for ages, to approximate the glory that her voice once was. At times, though, the results are lovely and heartbroken rather than saddening, especially with the simpatico musical backing she got in these sessions. Details

A harrowing classic, Billie Holiday's personal favorite among her '50s albums captures the singer 17 months before her death, her once honeyed voice, weakened from rough living & heroin addiction, its ravages highlighted by the 1958 session's crisp sonics and the contrasting "satin" of Ray Ellis' sleek string arrangements. Yet it is that very contrast that explains the power of these performances: In revisiting its torchy standards, Holiday reduces them to their core of pain and longing, transforming "I'm a Fool to Want You," "You Don't Know What Love Is," and "You've Changed" into naked declaration. This 1997 version adds unreleased takes and a beautiful 20-bit digital transfer to extract every shivering pang of Holiday's music. Details
