R.E.M. mark the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, "Radio Free Europe," was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional and modern. Throughout the '80s, they worked relentlessly, releasing records every year and touring constantly, playing both theaters and backwoods dives. Along the way, they inspired countless bands, from the legions of jangle pop groups in the mid-'80s to scores of alternative pop groups in the '90s, who admired their slow climb to stardom. Details

The band credited with spawning the "sleaze rock" lip-gloss and hairspray style that emerged from the Hollywood Strip (Los Angeles, California) at the dawn of the 80s and came to dominate rock in that decade. The most famous of those that followed included Poison and Guns n' Roses...

The longtime lead vocalist for Krautrock pioneers Can, Kenji "Damo" Suzuki was born in Japan on January 16, 1950. An expatriate street poet inspired by Jack Kerouac's On the Road, he spent the better part of the late 1960s wandering through Europe, and while busking outside a cafe in Munich in May of 1970 was discovered by Can members Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit; asked to replace the group's former frontman Malcolm Mooney, Suzuki joined them onstage that very night, making his recorded debut later that same year on the LP Soundtracks. With Suzuki in the lineup, Can produced its most enduring and innovative work, including classic LPs like 1971's Tago Mago, 1972's Ege Bamayasi and 1973's Future Days; however, upon completing work on the latter, he left the band to become a Jehovah's Witness. Absent from music for a decade, in 1983 Suzuki began showing up unannounced to perform at shows by the band Dunkelziffer, eventually joining the group full-time and recording a pair of LPs; in 1998, he founded the Damo's Network label, issuing a series of live recordings including V.E.R.N.I.S.S.A.G.E., Seattle and the seven-CD box set P.R.O.M.I.S.E..

Volume two of Hip-O's Mötley Crüe retrospective, Music to Crash Your Car To, is decidedly less impressive than its predecessor. That's not to say that the poster, essay-augmented booklet, demos, alternate mixes, unreleased track, and comic book aren't reasons enough for the average fan to run to the store...

Avant-Garde / Electronic / Experimental Rock / Experimental Electronic

As a founding member of the legendary German avant-garde ensemble Can, Holger Czukay is widely recognized as a founding father of experimental rock & roll. After his acrimonious split from the band, Czukay swore he'd never play live again. But the sounds of jungle, techno, and trip-hop rekindled his interest in the club scene, so when Dr. Walker (of Air Liquide) invited Czukay to join him on-stage during an underground party in Cologne, Germany, he was ready. This impromptu duo performance led to a number of more formal engagements, three of which are partially documented on these two discs.

The Electric Hellfire Club - Calling Dr. Luv (1996)

When Thomas Thorn, demented chairman of the Electric Hellfire Club, lost his bandmate and best friend, the Rev. Dr. Luv, to a car accident, Thorn recorded this ultraviolent valentine to the good Dr. and the band that drew the two to music: the fearsome foursome, Kiss. "Calling Dr. Love" is a tough song to get wrong, and the title cover track is exquisite, replete with cool backups and Shane (the Rev. Dr. Luv's Christian name) samples: a faithful yet fresh rendering of the Gene Simmons manifesto. The surrounding album holds other momentous movements like "Hellflower" which blossoms into an electro-Nuggets flashback; while "Very Groovy Boots" goes beyond the valley of the devil-dolls. "He Who Holds the Lightning Rod" plays like a cute and fluffy Skinny Puppy, extolling the legend of the mighty Thor, "God of Thunder." Some grooves are wasted, but the actual songs comprise a reverent tribute and a deliciously deceptive Molotov cocktail. ~Allmusic Details

Dr. Feelgood topped the Billboard 200 chart, being the first album Mötley Crüe had recorded after their quest for sobriety and rehabilitation in 1989. In addition to being Mötley Crüe's bestselling album, it is widely regarded by music critics and fans as being their strongest. Dr. Feelgood has sold more than 6 million copies in the U.S. alone, and went Gold in the U.K.. In various interviews, members of Mötley Crüe stated that it was their most solid album from a musical standpoint, due in no small part to their collective push for sobriety. Details
