Primarily known as a jazz singer with a distinctive baritone, vocalist Arthur Prysock began his career in 1944 as a vocalist in Buddy Johnson’s band and sang on several of Johnson’s hits. In 1952 Prysock went solo and scored a big R&B hit with "I Didn’t Sleep a Wink Last Night.” Over the years Prysock switched easily between jazz and R&B and in the mid-1960’s was recording with the Count Basie band. In the 1970’s, Prysock had a surprise disco hit with "When Love Is New." His brother, Red Prysock, the noted tenor sax player, appeared on many of Arthur's records. Presented here is Arthur’s rare, soul / disco album “Arthur Prysock Does It Again!,” originally released in 1977. All selections newly remastered.

As part of The Stranglers' celebration of their Ruby Anniversary, the definitive collection of the B-side recordings they made whilst signed to Epic is released for the first time, via their own label. Appropriately, as befits a band marking forty years together, Here & There: The Epic B-sides Collection 1983-1991 gathers 40 tracks across 2 CDs and is also released as a 40 track digital package. The Stranglers released no less than 13 singles in the UK during this period, which saw them produce five albums: four studio and one live. The Stranglers signed to Epic Records in 1982 having been with United Artists / Liberty since 1977. The change of label coincided with changes in marketing policy across the UK industry - often dubbed "the Frankie Goes to Hollywood effect". Previously, The Stranglers' had released only one 12" single - an extended version of Bear Cage in 1980 - but from 2nd Epic single, Midnight Summer Dream until 1990, each release had a 12" version which required extra studio or, increasingly, live tracks to "add value" to the package.

She was the teenage siren from Akron, Ohio that Jake Riviera signed to Stiff Records in the 1970's at the height of the new wave. She enjoyed the backing of some fantastic bands like The Records, The Rumour (also doubling backing Graham Parker) and Fingerprintz, who would go on to record 4 albums of their own. (If you listen closely, you can hear labelmate Lene Lovich singing backup as well!) Being in such esteemed company, she gained street cred by covering Elvis Costello's "Stranger In The House" (a rarity included with initial copies of his second album) and hitting with singles like a cover of "B-A-B-Y", "Who Does Lisa Like", "Suspended Animation", "Pin A Medal On Mary" and more. In days long before American Idol was even conceived, Sweet stands out as one of the genuine vocal artists and brightest hightlights of the 70's new wave/postpunk era.

Blues / Soul-Blues

B.B. King is one of America's few, long-standing musical treasures whose stature has grown to an unassailable, international level. Despite his 85 years, King continues to tour, perform and to grow in influence, casting a shadow that reaches far beyond the blues scene from whence he first came. His warm, down-home vocal style, his distinctive, talking blues guitar playing, and his songs that sing of love's joys and hardships Sweet Sixteen, How Blue Can You Get?, Help The Poor, The Thrill Is Gone and countless others are all indelibly imprinted elements in the modern musical heritage. Celebrating his 50th Anniversary signing to ABC-Paramount Records in 1962 we bring you this multi-format career retrospective. Leading the way with a slick 10 CD, 194 track collection chronicling his entire career from his first recordings in 1949 through to his most recent studio album.

Most of B.B. King's studio albums of the '80s and '90s tend to de-emphasize his guitar playing and consist largely of forgettable originals and obvious attempts at pop hits. However this CD (which was cut in the studios) is on a higher level and is quite rewarding. Most of the tunes were co-written by pianist Joe Sample and Will Jennings, and the majority are quite catchy and memorable. Certainly it is easy to sing along with the refrains of "I'm Moving On," "Back in L.A." and "Roll, Roll, Roll." On this date King usually overdubbed his guitar to play along with his vocals (somehow the interplay does not sound spontaneous) but it does not detract from the final results. The intelligent and philosophical lyrics fit King's style very well and his voice is very much in prime form. Well worth acquiring.

B.B.King – Let the Good Times Roll: The Music of Louis Jordan
Label: MCA-1999 | MP3 CBR 320kbps | Time: 60:08 | Size: 126 MB
Genre : Blues/ Soul-Blues

Even if B.B. King is the King of the Blues, some might find it strange that he chose to record Let the Good Times Roll, a tribute album to Louis Jordan, the King of Jump Blues. King's work was never as boisterous or enthusiastic as Jordan's, but his debt is apparent from the first cut of the album. King may have never done straight jump blues, but his sophisticated urban blues — complete with horn sections and an emphasis on vocals — shows as much jump influence as it does Delta. Let the Good Times Roll brings that home with a quiet, seductive insistence. Backed by a stellar band — featuring Dr. John on piano, drummer Earl Palmer, alto saxophonist Hank Crawford, and tenor saxophonist Dave "Fathead" Newman, among others — B.B. King sounds loose and natural. There are stars in the band, but this is hardly a bloated all-star effort, since the focus in on delivering no-nonsense performances. Strangely enough, King doesn't play that much guitar on the album, concentrating on his vocals and letting the band interact. When he does solo, it's as elegant and tasteful as always, but the focal point is always the songs. Since he's such a fine guitarist, B.B.'s singing often goes underappreciated, but here it's at the forefront, and he shines. His phrasing is impeccable, and he always captures the spirit of the songs, either through humor or heart. Of course, that's a skill that Jordan had, as well, and realizing that sheds new light on B.B.'s music. Much of his celebrated skills as a showman and a performer indirectly came from Jordan, as did elements of his musical style. Never has that been as clear as it is on Let the Good Times Roll. Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine.

Over-glossed R&B tracks, heavy doses of keyboards and drum programming are an ideal way to make albums for the pop charts, but for B.B. King, they are tools of disaster. Lyrically and vocally the album holds up rather well. ...
