Dave Valentin - World On A String (2005)
EAC RIP | FLAC(tracks)+CUE+LOG / 319 MB | No Covers | MP3 - CBR 320 Kbps / 123 MB
Jazz, Latin Jazz, Jazz Flute | Original Release Date: June 28, 2005 | Label: HighNote Records (HCD4121)

The most unusual aspect of this release from flutist Dave Valentin is that he performs the two swing standards "I've Got the World on a String" and "I Remember You." The style of music Valentin plays is unchanged from his other CDs, being lightly funky, utilizing Latin rhythms, and having his flute on top much of the time. Baritonist Ronnie Cuber guests on "Passion Fruit," but otherwise Valentin is just joined by a large rhythm section with his usual pianist Bill O'Connell. He plays as fluently as usual and, although there are no other surprises, the music is pleasing, danceable, and reasonably creative. By Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Valentin gained attention early on as a versatile musician who was able to play in Latin jazz groups but found professional success by exploring the sounds of world music with his flute. He was adept at Latin and straight-ahead jazz, but was also known for combining Latin rhythms with pop sounds in his original music. He was the first artist signed to the GRP jazz label in 1978 and released 18 world music albums on the imprint.

Recorded live at The Osaka Festival Hall, March 16, 1980 as part of the The Memorial Festival Of ABC (Asahi) TV's 30th Anniversary. “GRP All-Stars Live In Japan” offers all the excitement of a rare Dave Grusin stage performance. The event was part of a successful tour through Japan, and also taped for television among festivities celebrating the 30th anniversary of Asahi (ABC) Television. This tour, showcasing the talents of new GRP signings Dave Valentin, Tom Browne and Bobby Broom, had been on Dave Grusin's agenda for some years before it materialized in 1980. Now all the elements came into place, and added to the mix of the New-York based band were the tasty bass of Marcus Miller and keyboard talents of old Japan hand, Don Grusin.

A fairly typical Dave Grusin date from the early days of GRP, this set features five of the keyboardist/producer's originals. The music is often atmospheric and a bit cinematic, with Grusin assisted by the soprano of Grover Washington and flutist Dave Valentin (along with top rhythm section players) on two songs apiece; "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter" has Grusin's keyboards joined just by Ron Carter's bass.

Colosseum's second album, also in 1969, was Valentyne Suite, notable as the first release from Vertigo Records, the first label to sign heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath. Vertigo Records was a branch of Philips, established to sign and develop artists that did not fit the main Philips Records brand.
Mark Clarke then replaced Tony Reeves on bass, and Hiseman recruited vocalist Chris Farlowe to enable Clempson to concentrate on guitar. This is considered to be the definitive Colosseum line-up, which recorded the 1970 album Daughter of Time. Details

The music of Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov is a unique and delicate tapestry of dramatic and emotional textures, that freely alludes to the entire history of music. "I do not write new music. My music is a response to and an echo of what already exists," Silvestrov has said. Beginning his creative career in the radical Soviet Avant-Garde, Silvestrov demonstrated an almost painful sensitivity to the intimacy that music can create between performer and listener. Silvestrov would later refute his modernist roots, saying “the most important lesson of the Avant-Garde is to be free of all conceived ideas, particularly those of the Avant-Garde” and began composing a series of works entitled “Postludium” that initiated the elegiac, poetic and highly personal relationship with silence which has come to characterize his most recent music. Haenssler Classic is proud to present pianist Jenny Lin in the World Premiere Recording of Silvestrov’s “Three Postludes”, a work composed especially for her.
