Jazz / Bop / International Jazz / Guitar

Reissue with the latest remastering. Features original cover artwork. This Timeless CD is a bit unusual in that guitarist Charlie Byrd sings the first six numbers; it is only the second time in his career he has taken vocals on record. His singing is simple and generally effective if not too memorable. The final 11 numbers are instrumentals (odd programming) and also surprising in that the emphasis is on standards, often from the swing era; there is only one Brazilian song (Antonio Carlos Jobim's "So Danca Samba"). Byrd (in a trio with bassist Joe Byrd and drummer Chuck Redd) is in generally fine form overall although it is doubtful that he will get too many requests to feature his singing in the future.

Charlie Byrd Quintet - Du Hot Club De Concord (1995)
Brazilian Jazz / Swing
MP3 | VBR ~218 kbps | 15 tracks | 99,97 Mb

This project is an inspired idea. Guitarist Charlie Byrd, who will always be best-known for his bossa nova recordings, also always loved Django Reinhardt's music. He heads du Hot Club de Concord, a group similar to the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, except that instead of being comprised of three guitars, one violin, and a bass, this ensemble has two guitars (with Frank Vignola playing rhythm behind Byrd), violinist Johnny Frigo, bassist Michael Moore, and Hendrik Meurkens on harmonica. The blend between harmonica and violin is particularly effective, and the repertoire ranges from swing tunes (including Byrd's "Swing '59") to some light Brazilian music, ballads, and standards. Byrd, Frigo, and Meurkens take plenty of fine solos, making this a highly recommended set. – Scott Yanow, All Music Guide Details

Steeve Laffont - New Quintet (2012)
MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 105,40 MB | 12 Tracks | 47:51
Genre: Gypsy Jazz, Jazz Swing | Label: Le Chant du Monde

Yes, Steeve Laffont is a Manouche, and yes again, he plays in Django style as only a handful of guitarists can. But his hopes and wishes as well as his talent are not limited to this obsessive technical skill, nor are his personal musical universe and artistic ambitions limited to working in the wake of Django and his various approaches to jazz. He s been playing guitar in different styles forever (or so it seems), always with the same fervour, the same strong desire, and the same spontaneity. So he is quietly evolving in different ways with the same supple feline grace as Grant Green, the same controlled fieriness as Wes Montgomery, the same sophisticated elegance as Joe Pass, the same sense of melody as Charlie Byrd, the same rolling groove as George Benson, the same elegant lyricism as Jim Hall. Steeve Laffont spells happiness that of innocence found once again, the pure inspiration of an unaffected, direct style constantly aimed at pleasure and jubilation.

Chet BAKER - Riverside profiles (2006) 2 CD
Jazz | mp3@~192 | 07 Nov 2006 | Label RIVERSIDE | 140 Mb

Personnel: Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet); Wes Montgomery (guitar); Herbie Mann (flute); Kenny Burrell, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans (piano); Pepper Adams, Paul Chambers, Cannonball Adderley Quartet. Chet Baker recorded a lot of excellent music over the course of his lengthy career, but his late 1950s dates for Riverside rank among his finest. Baker was one of the few artists to truly transcend the "cool" style, creating with his restrained and delicate approach to the trumpet (and to his singing) some of the most lyrical, delicate, and emotionally powerful work in jazz. This 11-track compilation shouldn't take the place of Baker's studio albums of the time, but it's a wonderfully assembled introduction to the artist. "Look for the Silver Lining," "September Song," and "Almost Like Being in Love" are highlights, but every tune here is a gem. Included is a bonus compilation disc of other Riverside artists from the period, including Wes Montgomery, Charlie Byrd, and Thelonious Monk.

Reissue with the latest remastering and the original cover artwork. Comes with a description written in Japanese. Jazz sessions with Toots Thielemans are always a treat, and this album's no exception – one that features Toots' guitar and harmonica in the company of some great younger players from the 70s European scene! The set was produced by Chris Hinze, who also plays flute on the record – and other group members include Philip Catherine on guitar, Joachim Kuhn on keyboards, and the mighty rhythm team of John Lee on bass and Gerry Brown on drums – all musicians who lay back beautifully here, and really stick to the spacier side of their talents! Given that Toots is on harmonica on most numbers, the sound is wonderfully gentle – hardly the heavy fusion workout you might expect from the lineup, although there's a few subtle doses of funk that are much appreciated.

Jazz / Soul Jazz / Contemporary Jazz / Bass

Reissue with the latest remastering and the original cover artwork. Comes with a description written in Japanese. Bassist Clint Houston never made many albums as a leader, but all of them are well worth tracking down – and this one may be the best of the bunch! The set has Clint working with frequent musical partner Joanne Brackeen on piano, as well as Ryo Kawasaki on guitars – who'd played with Joanne around the same time – and percussionist Rubens Bassini completes the group, and adds in some great subtle elements at the bottom. Tracks are long, and often very personal – quite different than the sort of music that many other bassists might provide as a leader – and a great showcase for Houston's highly melodic approach to his instrument. Clint plays both acoustic and electric, and a bit of guitar as well – and titles include "Black Thing", "Geri", "Goodbye Mr P", "You Are Like The Sunshine", and "Letitia".

Jazz / Post Bop / Modern Post Bebop / Piano Trio / Guitar

Reissue with the latest remastering and the original cover artwork. Comes with a description written in Japanese. The togetherness here comes from great interplay between the piano of Don Friedman and guitar of Klaus Flenter – two players who work surprisingly well on the record, and each seem to bring out the best in each other! Freidman's tones on the piano have this extra-chromatic approach, which is really echoed in the guitar at times – often in the album's more dynamic moments, which have a vibe that's quite different than Don's regular trio outings. The rest of the group features Henk Haverhoek on bass and Eric Ineke on drums – and titles include "Vieux Roue", "Minor Ballad", "Autumn In Summer", "Lonely Evening", "Elba", "New Dawn", and "Mohonk Blues".

Jazz / Post Bop / Modern Post Bebop / Fusion / Jazz Funk / Keyboards

Reissue with the latest remastering. Features original cover artwork. A really nice mix of modes from keyboardist Jasper Van'T Hof – as some cuts feature the heavy electric modes we know from his MPS recordings of the 70s – but others feature a much more personal approach on acoustic piano! As with other records from the time, Jasper plays a range of keyboards here – from piano to Fender Rhodes to organ – and the group shifts a bit from track to track, depending on the mood – and features Wim Overgaauw on guitar, John Lee on bass, Zbigniew Seifert on violin, and Gerry Brown on drums. Lee and Brown kick in heavily on the jamming cuts, but lay back more on the mellower ones.
