CTI All-Stars - California Concert - The Hollywood Palladium (1972) (Remastered 2010)
Jazz | XLD rip | FLAC + CUE + LOG | 2 Discs | Full Scans | 870 Mb
Label ~ Masterworks Jazz

This double CD is a classic. For a concert held at the Hollywood Palladium in 1971, Creed Taylor gathered together most of his top stars and demonstrated why CTI was one of the most significant labels of the era. On lenghthy renditions of "Fire and Rain," "Red Clay," "Sugar," "Blues West" and "Leaving West," the all-star lineup (trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, tenor-saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, altoist Hank Crawford, flutist Hubert Laws, guitarist George Benson, keyboardist Johnny Hammond, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Billy Cobham and percussionist Airto) is in inspired form, particularly Hubbard and Turrentine. This wonderful music belongs in every serious jazz collection. ~ AllMusic

As usual, bassist Charles Fambrough assembled an impressive all-star group for this CD. Reissue features the high-fidelity Blu-spec CD format (compatible with standard CD players) and the latest remastering. Smooth and silky jazz funk from trombonist Urbie Green – a record that's much more in a mainstream R&B fusion mode than his earlier work – yet also arranged by David Matthews in a soulful style that still keeps things pretty real on the best cuts! The group's a good one for the mellow groove of the material – and includes Mike Mainieri on keyboards, Eric Gale on guitar, Jeremy Steig on flute, and Toots Thielemans laying down a bit of harmonica – all kicking back in classic 70s CTI styles. Titles include the nice modal groover "Mertensia", plus "Manteca", "Foxglove Suite", "Another Star", and "Goodbye".

Reissue features the high-fidelity Blu-spec CD format (compatible with standard CD players) and the latest remastering. Exposing a jazz purist to most recordings involving Fonce and Larry Mizell is much like shoving a vampire into daylight. Gambler's Life, the first of two Johnny "Hammond" Smith albums featuring the brothers' ambitious handiwork, isn't an exception. Watch a purist seek shelter in his dank cave whenever this album is within earshot. Smith switches to Fender Rhodes for most of the material, and the Mizells bring their ARPs, spirited if unpolished group vocal arrangements, wah-wah guitars, and soaring instrumental arrangements made to shine on the dancefloor. Strong throughout, the album runs as efficiently and as sweetly as any other groove-heavy album of its time.

Patti’s debut for CTI, END OF A RAINBOW was conceived after she played demos of songs she’d written (but originally never planned to record) for arranger Bill Eaton who in turn played them for his production partner percussionist Ralph MacDonald. After MacDonald let Creed Taylor hear some of the songs, Patti began recording what would become her much-acclaimed debut set for the label which featured eight original Austin compositions including the U.S. R&B charted single, “Say You Love Me” and “Sweet Sadie The Savior” (also recorded by Blood, Sweat & Tears). The 1976 LP (with some of New York’s top session players) became a U.S. Top 40 jazz charted album and is included in its entirety on this SoulMusic Records’ compilation drawn from Patti’s four years with CTI.

Freddie Hubbard – First Light (1971) (Epic-CTI Recordings)
1971 | Jazz | EAC RIP | FLAC+CUE+LOG+HQ-Covers (400Dpi) | 217Mb+11Mb

Following on from Red Clay and Straight Life is this great Grammy winning album. Freddie Hubbard is seemingly at the height of his powers here once again and backed up by a supporting cast that includes a number of other established stars. Musically, Freddie's trumpet/flugelhorn is just a pleasure to listen to. The title track is the highlight of the CD and the live version (offered as a bonus track) is also really enjoyable. The other tracks are primarily jazz interpretations of existing tunes but they come off sounding much better than that might suggest. This is a great album to sit back and listen to with the lights out. The great musicianship just demands your attention and there is seldom a dull moment as it unfolds. Details
