Atoms for Peace are an English-American experimental rock supergroup comprising Radiohead singer Thom Yorke (vocals, guitar, piano), Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, longtime Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich (keyboards, synthesisers, guitars), drummer Joey Waronker of Beck and R.E.M., and percussionist Mauro Refosco of Forro in the Dark. Yorke formed the band in 2009 to perform songs from his debut solo album, The Eraser (2006). They released an album of original material, Amok, on February 25, 2013.

Previous hits anthologies representing this interesting prog-metal pioneer are either pricey imports, out of print rarities, sadly incomplete, or any combination of the three. Heavy Soul rectifies this by containing no less than four cuts from each of the band's first five discs that came out during the group's halcyon days of 1970-1973; In Hearing of Atomic Rooster gets eight of its nine cuts placed here, in fact. Some obsessive types might complain that none of the post-Nice & Greasy discs are represented -- for some reason, there's a pocket of fans who salivate over the metallic '80s material the Roost put out before finally calling it a day -- but the key material that put the band on the map is all here. Atomic Rooster was the brainchild of former Crazy World of Arthur Brown keyboardist Vincent Crane. This 2 cd anthology summarizes the first 5 albums of the band before they broke up the first time. Vincent Crane was tormented by psychological problems throughout his existence. He had a number of breakdowns and spent time in mental hospitals. He eventually took his own life on St. Valentine's Day 1989. His music however will live on through "Heavy Soul". Details

Much less bombastic than the band's earlier releases, In Hearing Of is almost funky at times, with "The Devil's Answer" sounding like a meeting between Memphis soul and British rock...

Recorded, as the title makes plain, at London's Marquee club in 1980, this is an uncompromising portrait of Atomic Rooster at their comeback peak. With the core duo of John du Cann and Vincent Crane recently reunited with classic-era drummer Paul Hammond, this scintillating recording captures the band bathing in the respect and adoration of an entire new generation of fans, the denizens of the so-called New Wave Of British Heavy Metal that grew up alongside, then exploded ahead of, the punk mainstream of the late 1970s.
