This is French Grand Opera at its best. This is considered by music historians as "ONE OF THE CHIEF CORNERSTONES OF FRENCH OPERA", Tell, Robert le Diable, and La Juive being the other corner stones. As a work, it is simply thrilling and very exciting musically. Auber knew how to keep his audience on the edge of their seats.

la vita e bella - nicola piovani 320kbps
Author: birzul

One of 1998's better soundtracks also follows the most simple of formulas. Nicola Piovani's score for Life Is Beautiful is an impressionistic soundtrack at its finest--a delicious mix that sounds inspired by both simple folk melodies and Morricone's Cinema Paradiso score. Throughout, Piovani's themes are like a kid in candy store: bright-eyed and innocent. Tension is gradually introduced on tracks like "Il Treno Nel Buio," but ultimately this score is light and pleasant. The lone vocal cut, Monserrat Caballe singing on "Barcarolle," just makes this disc seem all the more Italian. Piovani hasn't created an epic score, but he has accentuated the difficult themes of Life Is Beautiful exceptionally well. --James Hendrickson ( Details

La Bruchollerie was born in Paris. She came from a family of musicians, both François-Adrien Boieldieu and André Messager being among her ancestors. At the age of 7 she entered the class of Isidor Philipp (a friend of her parents) at the Paris Conservatoire, which she left in 1928 with a first prize. After that she was a pupil of Alfred Cortot in Paris, of Emil von Sauer in Vienna and of Raoul von Koczalski in Berlin. A concert she gave in 1932 under the baton of Charles Münch brought her breakthrough as a pianist. Between 1936 und 1938 she went on to take part in more piano competitions, above all in the Chopin Competition of 1938 in Warsaw and the 1939 Brussels Competition.

The disc contains scenes from some Offenbach operettas such as La belle Hélène, La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein, and La Périchole as well as some of his lesser known works. While most of the music showcases Ms. Von Otter's talent, she is also accompanied by other soloists and a chorus, all of whom perform exceptionally well. Listeners are not only exposed to lesser known works of this composer, but also to the composer's many talents. When we listen to this music, it is not too much of a stretch to see how he could create the masterpiece of TALES OF HOFFMAN (yes, the barcarolle is included).

For a debut disc this publication offers much to be astonished at. First of all, there is the unusual programme whose Venice connection ensures thematic coherence. Familiar works are accompanied by neglected pieces - there is a convincing logic behind the odd running order, which tells us much about Florian Uhlig's tasteful judgment. Even if gondola songs dominate the scene, time and again the performer seeks to include virtuoso contrasts, as with his own arrangement of an aria by Benedetto Marcello. Uhlig refines his pianistic Venice receptions with a warm, beautifully controlled sound which, above all, pays tribute to an idyllic sound ideal. [Fono Forum, May 2001]
