Trumpeter Maynard Ferguson led his greatest big band during the years that he was signed to Roulette and all of the music from his 13 Roulette LPs (plus 11 previously unissued selections) are included on this deluxe limited-edition ten-CD box set. Although three of the LPs were originally recorded as dance records (and stick close to the melodies), this box as a whole finds Maynard at his peak and with an orchestra that includes such talented soloists as trombonists Slide Hampton and Don Sebesky (both of whom contributed arrangements), altoist Lanny Morgan, the tenors of Carmen Leggio, Willie Maiden, Joe Farrell, and Don Menza, pianists Jaki Byard and Joe Zawinul, and drummer Rufus Jones in addition to the leader. The music is very jazz-oriented and contains more than its share of classic moments, particularly the sessions that resulted in A Message From Newport and Newport Suite. It's highly recommended.

Spirit and Jo Jo Gunne veteran Jay Ferguson had one of the most enjoyable hits of the '70s with 1977's "Thunder Island." The vocalist/keyboardist was spared one-hit wonder status with one more Top 40 single, the terrific "Shakedown Cruise" from the 1979 follow-up Real Life Ain't This Way. It's a slick, professionally performed album, but except for "Shakedown Cruise," the songs aren't terribly memorable. The high level of craftsmanship is due to the personnel involved.

Bassist Jim Ferguson does something on Deep Summer Music and his 1999 debut, Not Just Another Pretty Bass, that few on his instrument can muster. And it's so simple, so dynamic. He sings. Well, he not only sings, but he offers up a pliable voice that can wrap around a lyric like a hug (try the lovely title tune here), and then morph into a playful, sardonic, jab-rich vehicle that shows off how much style he has. With Chris Potter by his side again on Summer, Ferguson shows clearly that he's no singer handling a bass. He plays his big axe with all the same flexibility, using a singing note-hold that bends around the melodies sweetly, and then a thumping rhythmic bounce that accentuates how groovy a cat Ferguson is. "What's A Guy Supposed to Do?" sounds as humorously exasperated as Mose Allison. The comparison to Mose is apt, for Ferguson has that same slight drawl and crisp funkiness. And he has a vocal range that can bellow near a baritone and still have some grit at the bottom to keep things textured smartly. A most important follow-up to Ferguson's auspicious debut. Details

An acclaimed historian offers a radical new history of the links between politics and economics, one that draws unsettling conclusions about the future of both capitalism and democracy. Does money make the world go round, as Cabaret's Master of Ceremonies sang to us? In The Cash Nexus, acclaimed historian Niall Ferguson offers a radical and surprising answer—No. Ferguson thinks it is high time we re-examined the link between economics and politics, in the aftermath not only of the failure of socialism but also of the apparent triumph of American-style capitalism. His central argument is that the conflicting impulses of sex, violence, and power are together more powerful than money. In particular, political events and institutions have often dominated economic development. Details

Limited Edition 10 CD set of only 5,000 copies worldwide. After immersing yourself in nine hours and 141 tracks of the Ferguson orchestra of the late 1950s and early sixties, Double high Cs will be ringing in your brain for months.Ferguson gave the orchestra a signature sound and much of its drive, but this was an arrangers’ band. The high-note trumpeter had charts from established writers like Marty Paich, Bill Holman, Ernie Wilkins and Benny Golson, but he also encouraged arrangements from band members, and launched the arranging careers of Slide Hampton, Don Menza, Mike Abene and Don Sebesky.Simply Amazing!. In 1968 American jazz giant and trumpet playing phenomenon Maynard Ferguson came to live in Britain. His stay in the UK lasted four years before returning to the US in 1972, and the four albums he recorded for the CBS label’s British division during that time are regarded by critics and fans alike as being among the best in his extensive discography. The two albums compiled here the first time they have been issued in CD format come from this period of Maynard’s career and showcase the trumpeter in two very different settings. Here are two superb albums featuring a bona fide jazz legend working in tandem with one of the UK’s finest arrangers and the cream of Britain’s jazz and session musicians. Details
