Cleo From 5 to 7 (Cleo de cinq a sept), per its title, concentrates on two hours in the life of a woman. Those hours are desperate ones, in that Cleo, a pop singer, awaits the results of her tests for cancer. Director Agnes Varda stages the film in "real" rather than subjective time, its various episodes divided into chapters, using significant Tarot cards. During the allotted time, Cleo visits her friends, tries to sing her worries away, spends money, and cries.

Leo, an egocentric, sexist businessman, who thinks he's God's gift to women, gets a taste of his own medicine when he tries picking up the wrong woman: a murderous psycho who shoots him. Leo falls off a bridge and emerges from the river, inexplicity transformed into a beautful woman. Naming herself Cleo, she (he) begins to place herself in Leo's life. While avoiding sexist office types and trying to find a way to turn herself back into a man, "Cleo" begins to develop her own personality that begins to take over Leo's.

This is a classic album by Cleo Laine and John Williams recorded in 1976. All the carefully chosen tracks are expertly sung and played. You will find a more gentle but still passionate Cleo on this cd. A great late night album, totally different to her jazz recordings. Worth the price alone for "He Was Beautiful". Other stand out tracks include "Eleanor Rigby","Wave" and "Killing Me Softly. Details

Genre: Drama

In early 1972, 30-year-old journalist and editor, Ita Buttrose and 35-year old Kerry Packer, heir to what was then Australia’s most ruthlessly powerful and influential publishing family, got together to create a magazine that became one of the most dramatic sensations in Australian publishing history. CLEO went on to help define women, Australia and the relationship between the two. Research and marketing analysis showed the project would be a failure and the magazine was vehemently opposed by the powerful head of the Packer clan, the domineering Sir Frank Packer (known to his employees as “God”), yet Ita and Kerry, knowing the consequences of failure would be dire, decided to back their gut instincts anyway.

With a multi-octave voice similar to Betty Carter's, incredible scatting ability, and ease of transition from a throaty whisper to high-pitched trills, Cleo Laine was born in 1927 in the Southall section of London, the daughter of a Jamaican father and English mother. Her parents sent her to vocal and dance lessons as a teenager, but she was 25 when she first sang professionally, after a successful audition with the big band led by Johnny Dankworth. Both Laine and the band recorded for Esquire, MGM and Pye during the late '50s, and by 1958, she was married to Dankworth. With Dankworth by her side, Laine began her solo career in earnest with a 1964 album of Shakespeare lyrics set to Dankworth's arrangements, Shakespeare: And All That Jazz. Details
