Ronnie Dyson was a Broadway star before making records. He was born in Washington D.C., but grew up in New York, taking to the stage in 1960s and ultimately voicing one of the decade’s best known show tunes “Aquarius”. He was just 18 when he joined the cast of “Hair” with a lead role in the show. Ronnie also featured in a movie “Putney Swope” in 1969 before signing to Columbia Records the following year. The albums we present here were Ronnie’s third and fourth for the label and represent the complete set of songs recorded by the artist produced by Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancy. The style was a departure from what Ronnie had recorded previously but similar to the sound the producers had brought to hits for Natalie Cole. Listen to Natalie’s song “This Will Be” from 1975 and compare with Ronnie’s single “Close To You” in 1976, the year in fact that Marvin Yancy married Natalie Cole. Lush arrangements by Gene Page and Richard Evans determine this music definitive luxury soul, There’s also some incredible 70s soul music here that’s been preserved from the original master tapes and brought on CD for the first time.

Do It All Night is Curtis Mayfield's flimsiest solo album yet, an indifferent collection of flaccid disco music. God knows, Mayfield has usually been uneven, but until now he's always managed to crank himself up at least once per LP and push his pretty, quavery voice over the line into conviction. Even on an outright bad record like Sweet Exorcist, there was that amazing title song, with its fluky, amiable beat and the outrageously funny conceit of its main character.

Features 24 bit remastering and comes with a mini-description. There was a lot of change in the air in 1967 when Jack McDuff released “Do it Now”, and that is reflected on many of the tracks on this fine soul jazz disc. In 67 James Brown was still developing the new funk sound, he had already hit us with the semi-funk of “I Feel Good”, but had not quite hit the pure funk heights of “I Got the Feelin” and “Say it Loud”. The first and last cuts on side one of McDuff‘s “Do it Now” are not quite full-on funk jazz numbers, but you can clearly hear the influence of James’ recent hits. In fact, side two closer and title cut, “Do it Now“, sounds like its based on that famous walk down riff from “I Feel Good”.

Daryl Hall and John Oates launched a comeback effort in 1997 with Marigold Sky, but few paid attention -- partially because the time wasn't right, partially because it wasn't the right album for a comeback. Six years later, the duo tried it again with Do It for Love and, remarkably, it all clicked. First of all, the climate was ripe for a Hall & Oates reunion, not just because the group was subjected to a flattering episode of VH1's Behind the Music, but because their longtime fans and '80s nostalgiaics alike were warm to the duo's hooky, sophisticated, effortlessly enjoyable blue-eyed soul. Then, there's the fact that Do It for Love is their best album in 20 years, even if it has very little to do with the sharply modern new wave-soul of Private Eyes and H2O. Although it sounds like neither, this hearkens back to the sensibility of both Abandoned Luncheonette and 1975's eponymous debut for RCA, where the emphasis was on the songwriting and the productions understatedly served the song.

In Frank’s words, "This is something quite different… I’m not trying to revolutionize the big band, I’m just telling it the way I hear it with thirteen horns and a rhythm section." After leading the Basie band for a decade, in ’95 Foster put down the baton to form his band—the Loud Minority. I jumped at the chance to record their week residency at NY’s Jazz Standard. The band was on a roll, playing high-energy, devil-may-care jazz. The crowd loved their blazing brass, their stomping solos, the powerful baritone vocals, the peerless Foster arrangements. My mikes captured the electric excitement of Jon Faddis’ trumpet solos, Basie-singer Dennis Rowland’s rabble-rousing "Wild Women Don’t Worry", and Sylvia Cuenca’s thunderous drum solo on "Lover".

Unprecedented, 21-track survey of ‘80s dancefloor juice from the Nigerian capital; the latest in a long line of invaluable and expertly-curated Soundway compilations. Whilst Nigeria’s ‘70s music has been covered in some depth thru various reissues, compilations and the enduring legacy of Afrobeat, it’s fair to say that the focus of Doing It In Lagos: Boogie, Pop & Disco in 1980’s Nigeria covers a much less well-known sound that’s no less effective on the right ‘floors.
