This boxed set consists of 10 CD and 1 DVD comprising 212 tracks and 12½ hours of playing time. They range in date from early 1934 to mid-October 1956, only three weeks before Tatum’s death. None of the tracks in this box was recorded in a studio for ultimate sale to the public. With the exception of some recordings made for the U.S. government, they are all live performances, from a wide variety of sources, including off-the-air radio broadcasts, the audio portion of his limited TV appearances, private parties, night club performances, after-hours clubs, transcriptions, recordings in private homes (including his own), and tracks from pressings made gratis for the Voice of America, and for the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II.

Arguably the greatest jazz soloist of all time, Art Tatum could play the piano with blinding speed, had technique that amazed classical pianists, and in the 1930s was harmonically three decades ahead of his time. While he considered his main influence to be Fats Waller, Tatum took his music to another planet altogether and was once introduced by Waller who simply said, God is in the house.

During four marathon recording sessions in 1953-55, Norman Granz recorded Art Tatum playing 119 standards, enough music for a dozen LPs. The results have been recently reissued separately on eight CDs and on this very full seven-CD box set. Frankly, Tatum did no real advance preparation for this massive project, sticking mosty to concise melodic variations of standards, some of them virtual set pieces formed over the past two decades. Since there are few uptempo performances, the music in this series has a certain sameness after awhile but, heard in small doses, it is quite enjoyable. A special bonus on this box (and not on the individual volumes) are four numbers taken from a 1956 Hollywood Bowl concert.

A rewarding release... As to the Mandarin, first impressions suggest a gloved fist on Ozawa's part and a general softening of attack since [his earlier DG recording from] 1975... Ozawa is strong on sensuality - those all-pervading glissandos, the seduction games and the languidly teasing sequences that lead to the chase... As to the Concerto for Orchestra...the Bostonians' Bartókian pedigree - it was, after all, Koussevitzky who commissioned the work — guarantees a certain élan and refinement... Ozawa is best where the going gets frantic (his finale is terrific, especially at the outset, and he plays Bartok's more concise original ending)... Ozawa's virtues are intelligence, alertness and a fine ear for detail... (Gramophone [8/1995] reviewing the Bartók recordings, originally released as Philips 442783)

On this four-CD set are included the bulk of Nat King Cole's radio transcriptions of 1941 and 1944-45. Although the programming could be a little better (the complete sessions are not compiled strictly in chronological order), the music has a strong unity and is consistently enjoyable. Pianist-vocalist Cole and his trio (which also includes important contributions by guitarist Oscar Moore and either Johnny Miller or Wesley Prince on bass) are featured extensively both as a unit and as an accompanying group to singers Anita Boyer, Ida James, Anita O'Day and the Barrie Sisters on 33, 15, five and five songs respectively.

Genre ~ Post-Bop, West Coast Jazz | Label ~ Widow's Taste

There are several Art Pepper boxed sets on the market but none that tried to cover the entire sweep of his checkered career until this one, the fourth in his widow Laurie Pepper's series of Unreleased Art projects for her own label. The three-CD set is thoughtfully divided by disc into three periods -- early Pepper from the cool 1950s, his lost years in the '60s when he spent most of the decade in jail on dope charges, and the final comeback from the mid-'70s until his death in 1982. ~ AllMusic

While it may be likely that serious fans of Art Tatum may own many or all of the recordings in this two-CD compilation released by Storyville with the blessings of the late pianist's estate, the acquisition of this particular edition should still be considered. First of all, the remastering exceeds all of the earlier LPs put out by various labels and equals or exceeds any other CD versions. ~ CDUniverse
