It's not a stretch to call Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn the most sublime of all dance partners and Sergei Prokofiev the most gifted 20th-century ballet composer. And so it goes without saying that the 1966 film version of the Royal Ballet production of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet featuring Nureyev and Fonteyn as the star-crossed lovers is an absolute must-have for anyone who cares a whit about the art.

Given its premiere by The Royal Ballet in 1965 with Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn dancing the title roles, Kenneth MacMillan's first full-evening ballet has become a signature work for the Company, enjoying great popularity around the world. From the outset, the production teems with life and colour as the townspeople, market traders and servants of the rival Montagues and Capulets go about their daily business in vibrant crowd scenes. But Romeo and Juliet take centre stage for those great pas de deux: the meeting in the ballroom, the balcony scene, the morning after the wedding and the final devastating tomb scene. Although The Royal Ballet has performed Romeo and Juliet over 400 times, each performance and pairing is subtly different and Lauren Cuthbertson and Federico Bonelli are utterly captivating in the title roles.

Hi. Here is another Prokofiev's 5th due to a friend's request. Enjoy!

This 1990 Prokofiev Fifth probably is the most successful of the handful of recordings Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra made for Philips. Having already demonstrated their flair for Prokofiev in the Romeo & Juliet suites for EMI, Muti and the Philadelphians offer an impressive rendition of the symphony, with stunning playing throughout. The orchestra made an earlier recording with Ormandy, whose keen conducting yielded a somewhat more incisive reading, but Muti has the advantage of Philips' modern recording, which presents the orchestra in full, spacious sound with wide dynamics (the tremendous close of the first movement and the grinding climax of the Adagio are powerfully reproduced). Muti and the orchestra also bring all of their virtuoso resources to bear on The Meeting of the Volga and the Don, an occasional work in the same state-sanctioned festive style that Shostakovich often turned to in his "public" pieces. If you missed this release the first time around, go to Arkivmusic.com and fetch a copy for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

This new release features the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sakari Oramo performing Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphonies Nos. 5 and 6. These two symphonies, composed in 1944 and 1947, are very different in mood, but stylistically closely related. The Fifth was written amid the chaos of the Second World War and seeks to find a positive solution; but in the Sixth, completed soon after war, the mood is darker. Both feature Prokofiev’s melodic writing at its best.

In breathing new life into the symphony, sonata, and concerto, Sergey Prokofiev emerged as one of the truly original musical voices of the twentieth century. Bridging the worlds of pre-revolutionary Russia and the Stalinist Soviet Union, Prokofiev enjoyed a successful worldwide career as composer and pianist. As in the case of most other Soviet-era composers, his creative life and his music came to suffer under the duress of official Party strictures. Still, despite the detrimental personal and professional effects of such outside influences, Prokofiev continued until the end of his career to produce music marked by a singular skill, inventiveness, and élan. As an only child (his sisters had died in infancy), Prokofiev lived a ........
