Gino Vannelli – Big Dreamers Never Sleep (1987)
Dreyfus Records | 1987 | Rock | EAC RIP | FLAC+CUE+LOG+HQ-Covers (400Dpi) | 276Mb+14Mb

"Wild Horses", "Persona Non Grata", and "King For A Day" are the most interesting songs on the album. "Wild Horses" is "a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll", perfectly proportioned. The vocals and the musical styles work to create a catchy tune that has you singing along before you know it. "Persona" has a nice latin, cuban cha-cha beat that makes you move to the music. The music tends to overshadow the "cruelty of illegal immigration" message. "King For A Day" has an ironic, meaningful, message about the reality of having the fame and fortune fantasy come true. I have come to actually love these three songs over the years, because when Gino sings them now, he does them with all of the passion and energy of his artistic genius, ditches the "Sheena sound", and unleashes the power of that beautiful voice. Yellowjackets – Live Wires (1992)
GRP Records Digital Recording | 1992 | Jazz Fusion | EAC RIP | FLAC+CUE+LOG+HQ-Covers (400Dpi) | 480Mb+9Mb

This album is an excellent summary of the Yellowjackets earlier years. The only thing missing was the Blues/fusion guitar of Robin Ford. Nevertheless, the live renditions of past classics is nothing short of breath-taking, with Bob Mintzer passionately leading the way on all-time favourites Geraldine, Wildlife and Freedomland. Indeed the true potential of the former two tracks was realized on "Live Wires", with Mintzer transforming them beyond recognition when compared to the sterile studio recorded versions of "The Spin" and "Four Corners". Skillfully edited together from the handful of Wall shows Floyd performed between 1980 and 1981 (much of the recordings date from shows at Earl's Court in London), Is There Anybody out There? replicates The Wall live -- which, of course, was a replication of the record, only with spectacular visuals. There are two songs not on the studio album -- "What Shall We Do Now?," a tune pulled from the record at the 11th hour (early pressings still listed it on the sleeve), plus "The Last Few Bricks," which was an instrumental at the end of the first act that gave the crew time to finish building the wall -- but they add nothing to the overall piece. There are no revelations at all, actually, with the possible exception of the layered harmonies on "Outside the Wall," which makes this coda seem like a full-fledged song. Since the show was so rigidly structured, there was little opportunity for the band to stretch out and jam. All of this means that Is There Anybody out There? is The Wall by any other name, and that it isn't for anybody but Floyd fanatics. Will this disappoint the less-dedicated listener? Not necessarily, since anybody familiar with The Wall will likely enjoy it as it's playing. The question is, how often will you put the record on? After all, if you want to hear this music, you'll listen to the studio recording. That doesn't really diminish the worth of Is There Anybody out There?, but it hardly makes it necessary, either. -- Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

A very interesting late romantic symphony, based it on the legend of Il'ya Muromets, the subject of ancient Russian epic. Mostly tonal, very descriptive and dramatic. Details

World premiere recordings
The interpretations from László Paulik using a Jahann Hentschl violin (c.1750) are of an exceptional standard with assured and expressive playing of purity and precision of intonation that at times takes the breath away. In the Allegros he displays astonishing virtuosity of great elegance with clean textures and articulation. I especially loved the heavenly sounds he displays and the high degree of emotional intensity in the contemplative and affecting Adagios. The sensitive support is impeccable displaying a wide spectrum of orchestral colours. Michael Cookson

FLAC+CUE 289 MB | MP3 HQ 118 MB | EAC | No Log | Covers | 1990

This is a delightful disc and these recordings have been available for over 20 years. The opening theme of the Handel is a real joy, 'catchy' and very welcome. Marisa Robles captures the spirit if it to perfection and the larghetto is wonderfully controlled.
