"...This record serves primarily to remind us of the importance of Harold Arlen in both popular music and jazz, twenty years after his death, and once again, to remind us of the importance of Toots Thielmans. Seeing the harmonica player in concert is one of the most beautiful, moving musical experiences one can have." -- Ian Patterson Details

Not many European-born musicians have been admitted to the select inner circle of jazz innovators. One of them, of course, is the Belgian Jean Toots Thielemans. His amazing capacity to coax real music from a harmonica made of him a true virtuoso. And, as a guitarist, Toots also proved to be more than proficient at playing simple and eloquent, as we can appreciate in this charming program of nice music carried forth with taste, creativity and restrain.

Reissue with the latest remastering and the original cover artwork. Comes with a description written in Japanese. Jazz sessions with Toots Thielemans are always a treat, and this album's no exception – one that features Toots' guitar and harmonica in the company of some great younger players from the 70s European scene! The set was produced by Chris Hinze, who also plays flute on the record – and other group members include Philip Catherine on guitar, Joachim Kuhn on keyboards, and the mighty rhythm team of John Lee on bass and Gerry Brown on drums – all musicians who lay back beautifully here, and really stick to the spacier side of their talents! Given that Toots is on harmonica on most numbers, the sound is wonderfully gentle – hardly the heavy fusion workout you might expect from the lineup, although there's a few subtle doses of funk that are much appreciated.

This rather memorable Pablo recording, his only album as a leader for Norman Granz's label (although he made several notable appearances as a sideman), features the great jazz harmonica player Toots Thielemans in a sparse trio with guitarist Joe Pass and bassist Niels Pedersen. The four main numbers ("Blues in the Closet," "Thriving on a Riff," "Autumn Leaves," and "Someday My Prince Will Come") are pure bebop, and Thielemans' solo guitar rendition of "The Mooche" is also a highlight.

Toots Thielemans European Quartet - 90 yrs. (2012)
MP3 320 kbps CBR | 45:00 min | 127 MB
Genre: Jazz | Label: Challenge Jazz

Toots Thielemans, the renowned harmonica player and one of the world's great jazz icons, turned 90 years old in April. Challenge Records is celebrating this anniversary with a special live CD and bonus DVD that contains unique material. The CD was recorded live with his excellent quartet, whilst the DVD includes 'Between a smile and a tear' - a wonderful documentary about Toots. "I can say without hesitation that Toots is one of the greatest musicians of our time. On his instrument he ranks with the best that jazz has ever produced. He goes for the heart and makes you cry. We have worked together more times than I can count and he always keeps me coming back for more." Details

Toots Thielemans - Only Trust Your Heart (1988)
Bop, Swing, Latin Jazz
MP3 | VBR ~180 kbps | 12 tracks | 81.4 MB

Although the liner notes claim that this Concord release was Toots Thielemans' first recording as a leader in more than a dozen years, somehow the harmonica great's 14 European dates (not to mention sets released by Stash and Pablo) were overlooked. In any case, this is a pretty definitive session by the harmonica virtuoso who is joined by pianist Fred Hersch, either Marc Johnson or Harvie Swartz on bass, and drummer Joey Baron. The material is filled with challenging and generally underplayed standards (including Wayne Shorter's "Speak No Evil," Thad Jones' "Three and One," Benny Carter's lyrical "Only Trust Your Heart," and Thelonious Monk's "Little Rootie Tootie"), plus two fine Hersch originals. Ranging from hard bop to Brazilian music and post-bop, this is a consistently enjoyable and highly recommended outing.

Jim Hall - Subsequently (1992)
MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 9 Tracks | 53:48 | 122,74 MB
Genre: Jazz, Swing | Label: MusicMasters

Jim Hall's third CD for Musicmasters is the usual excellent mix of well-crafted originals and thoughtfully-arranged standards that one has come to expect from the veteran guitarist. It also marks the addition of young keyboardist Larry Goldings and the recording debut of a promising young Danish tenor saxophonist Rasmus Lee. The leader's "Subsequently" is an immediately infectious song that kicks off the release, while "Pancho" is a captivating bossa nova with a few twists thrown in, and "Waiting to Dance" is a brisk waltz that has a few detours into post-bop. Hall's also covers his wife's tasty composition "The Answer Is Yes" once again. Standard fare includes a gracefully swinging "I'm in the Mood for Love" and a foot-tapping "More Than You Know"; harmonica player Toots Thielemans is a special guest on his own upbeat "Waltz for Sonny." With the demise of Musicmasters, this highly recommended CD could soon turn into a hard to find collectable.
