Beginning in 2012, pianist Kenny Barron and bassist Dave Holland formed a duo partnership that found them performing live all around the world. The duo's 2014 studio album, The Art of Conversation, showcases this collaboration with a simple, beautifully understated mix of standards and original compositions. Journeyman solo artists and bandleaders in their own right, both Barron and Holland are virtuoso musicians who've made their mark playing disparate, if compatible, styles of jazz.

Kenny Barron - Scratch
Jazz | 2008 | MP3 CBR 320Kbps => 101 MB | Time 42:09 | Covers

A highlight of the ENJA catalog, this trio recording received the prestigious "Prix Bud Powell de l'Académie du Jazz" back in 1986. "Scratch" is still one of the finest and most challenging recordings Kenny Barron has ever made. A multi-poll winner, Barron is widely considered the most versatile and tasteful pianist of today. Barron has recorded with all the great names in jazz: Abbey Lincoln, Barney Kessel, Chet Baker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, James Moody, J.J. Johnson, Joe Henderson, Johnny Griffin, Kevin Mahogany, Yusef Lateef and many more.
Sensing the potential in Kenny Barron, Matthias Winckelmann called the pianist in early 1985 to propose this trio recording with bass champion Dave Holland and drum wizard Daniel Humair. Following "Scratch", Kenny Barron did three more albums for ENJA with his quintet.

On this focused and passionate record, Alan Pasqua is joined by bassist Dave Holland and drummer Paul Motian -- two players with stellar reputations who don't appear together often. Motian's post-'70s playing tends to be free and fragmented, but he approaches Pasqua's material with a straight-ahead sense of swing. The leader, for his part, became known as a synth player following his work with the Tony Williams Lifetime in the late '70s, but here his playing and writing are closer to acoustic post-boppers like Mulgrew Miller and Kenny Barron.

Tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson's most famous recordings are his early Blue Notes and his more recent Verves, but in between he recorded exclusively for Milestone and, although Henderson was in consistently fine form in the diverse settings, he was somewhat neglected during his middle years. This massive eight-CD set contains all of the music from Henderson's dozen Milestone LPs, plus a duet with altoist Lee Konitz and his guest appearances with singer Flora Purim and cornetist Nat Adderley. The music ranges from Blue Note-style hard bop and modal explorations to fusion and '70s funk, with important contributions made by trumpeters Mike Lawrence, Woody Shaw, and Luis Gasca, trombonist Grachan Moncur III, and keyboardists Kenny Barron, Don Friedman, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, George Cables, Alice Coltrane, Mark Levine, and George Duke, among others.
