This collection can also be observed as a musical autobiography of sorts, tracing his growth as a vocalist while remaining essentially the same.

In the years after Elvis Presley but before the Beatles, Cliff Richard was the biggest thing in British rock & roll and in the years after the Beatles, he was never far from the top of the U.K. charts. Arriving in 1958, just a couple of years after skiffle swept across Britain, Richard was the first English singer to approximate the hip-shaking rebellion of American rock & roll with his 1958 debut single "Move It." A smash hit right out of the gate, "Move It" kicked off an astonishing five decades' worth of hits (his last time in the U.K. Top 10 was, as of this writing, in 2008, when "Thank You for a Lifetime" went to three).

Cliff Richard has utilized a lot of guises and personae as a performer - '50s rock 'n' roller, '60s pop/rock vocalist, Christian musician, '70s rock vocalist, and, since the 1980s, a general U.K. entertainment institution, with a knighthood. But how many listeners ever thought of him as a singer/songwriter? The 31st of February Street was only ever issued in England, and is built on the work of Cliff Richard as a singer/songwriter. He was never known for his composing during the 1960s, and he proves amazingly good at it here; perhaps he was in the same boat as George Harrison, having stockpiled a brace of excellent original songs that just weren't appropriate for use in his earlier situation, but whatever their chronological origins, the original songs, mixed with some well-chosen outside compositions, make The 31st of February Street a bit stronger than his solo albums of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

On this album you will find a collection of the older (partly mono and partly stereo) recordings of Cliff made between 1958 and 1963. On the oldest recordings The Shadows still were called The Drifters. In 1960 they changed the band’s name into The Shadows with Jet Harris on bass guitar, Hank B. Marvin on lead guitar, Bruce Welch on rhythm guitar and Tony Meehan on drums. Tony Meehan was replaced by Brian Bennett in October 1961 and in April 1962 Jet Harris was replaced by Brian Locking, who in October 1963 was replaced by John Rostill. Details
