The two LP editions recorded at this Paris concert were the last examples of Bill Evans' playing to be released at the time. With bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joe La Barbera, Evans had one of the strongest trios of his career, as can be heard on such pieces as Edition One's "My Romance", "I Loves You, Porgy", and "Beautiful Love." The close communication between the players is reminiscent of Evans' 1961 unit with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian.

This radio broadcast was recorded from a December 1972 return to Paris (following Evans' appearance with Phil Woods on the same stage, which apparently wasn't recorded). It has the most adventuresome playing of the three Paris CDs issued by France's Concert, though there are no surprises among the songs played during this 70-plus-minute concert. All three members of the group are at the top of their form, with the simmering dramatic journey through a lengthy "Nardis" and the spirited encore of "Waltz for Debby" standing out as highlights. Probably one of the better examples of live dates by this edition of the Bill Evans Trio, this volume, like the previous two, is well worth acquiring.

The first of two CDs recorded for broadcast from a February, 1972 Paris Concert, this 45-minute set captures the Bill Evans Trio in excellent form, although the mood of this portion of the concert seems rather reserved overall. Evans opens with one of his favorite originals, "Re: Person I Knew," which is much slower than typical but absolutely captivating. Also notable are the dramatic "Turn Out the Stars" and top-notch versions of Scott LaFaro's "Gloria's Step" and Michel Legrand's timeless "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" The overall melancholy mood of this performance adds a new dimension to several of the pieces within it.

Bill Evans' Fantasy recordings of 1973-1979 have often been underrated in favor of his earlier work but, as this remarkable nine-CD set continually shows, the influential pianist continued to grow as a musician through the years while holding on to his original conception and distinctive sound. The collection has all of the 98 selections recorded at Evans' 11 Fantasy sessions, including nine numbers from a previously unreleased 1976 concert with his trio. In addition, Evans' appearance on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz radio program is tacked on as a bonus and it is actually among McPartland's finest shows, a fascinating hour of discussion and music with Evans.

The second half of the February, 1972 Paris concert is much more aggressive than the first. Starting with Evans' challenging "Twelve Tone Tune," the trio (with Eddie Gomez and Marty Morell) plays a much more varied set that better demonstrated their abilities. Also excellent are the especially subdued arrangement of Denny Zeitlin's "Quiet Now" (a favorite of Evans throughout his career) and Evans' "Very Early," which is a great feature for Eddie Gomez. The bittersweet interpretation of another original, "Time Remembered," is a prime example of why Bill Evans was widely admired, both as a composer and as a pianist.

This 2CD set features the brilliant pianist Bill Evans with bassist Marc Johnson and Joe LaBarbera on drums live in concert in Buenos Aires, Argentina on September 27, 1979.
A great deal of music by this trio has been released and I am not familiar with most of it, but the music on this CD is so good that I doubt there are many recordings of this group that are significantly better. If you like the 2 volumes of the Paris Concert you will like this. In fact I think it is a bit superior to those recordings.

Originally released in 1971, Trio Live is a concert album featuring pianist Bill Evans and his trio performing at the Trident Club in Sausalito, California in 1964. Backing Evans at this time were bassist Chuck Israels and drummer Larry Bunker. This is laid-back date that finds Evans delving into a handful of jazz standards including such songs as "Someday My Prince Will Come," "How My Heart Sings," "What Kind of Fool Am I?", and others. Although by no means an essential release, ardent Evans fans will definitely want to check this out.
