3D Lighting: History, Concepts, and Techniques by Arnold Gallardo
Publisher: Charles River Media | 2000 | 489 Pages | ISBN: 1584500387 | PDF | 9 MB

The majority of computer graphics books are either too general or too application-specific. The field of 3-D computer graphics possesses tremendous depth, and any aspect of it is worthy of a focused career. In large studios, artists concentrate on just one phase of production, be it modeling, texturing, animation, or rendering. If you're interested in learning about the field from this perspective, read 3-D Lighting: History, Concepts & Techniques. It's a pleasure to peruse, because it shares the large-studio focus.
The book does feature examples, project files, and some instructions for specific applications, but mostly it's about concept and theory in computer imaging. For the most part, it avoids application-specific discussion. This is a good thing--any experienced artist uses more than one application, and can easily port this information from one app to another.

Songwriter and guitarist Ry Cooder digs deep into the American psyche with Pull Up Some Dust and Sit Down. Inspired by a headline he'd read about the Wall Street bailout, and those who profited most from it, Cooder composed the album's opening track, "No Banker Left Behind," in a style not heard since his earliest recordings. It would have been right at home on his self titled debut or Paradise and Lunch. While not a concept recording, it is an album that reacts to the times topically. Its songs are declarative, sometimes angry, yet display his requisite humor and irony.

Joe Pass was without peer as a jazz guitarist during the last two decades of his life; this is one of many expected posthumous releases to emerge since his death. Because Pass concentrated primarily on solo and small-group recording sessions, it is a treat to hear him backed by larger ensembles like the NDR Big Band and Radio Philharmonic. The arrangements are respectful of the star and unobtrusive, with show tunes ("On a Clear Day"), standards ("Soft Winds"), and originals like his upbeat "Waltz for Django." The only person who might be dissatisfied with this CD would have been Joe himself, who was extremely well known for criticizing nearly every recording he ever released. ~ Ken Dryden Details
